@OP: Yes, this is the common rule known as en passant.

It'll bite you the first few times you get caught by it, but eventually you will come to remember it when planning your ideas as easily as remembering castling.

Had a gal used to hang around at our chess club. Just couldn't get the idea of en passant. She'd walk into at least once every single game. sometimes twice or more.

She finally gave up coming after a month or so.

I hate when that happens.
