Hey guys, I am new to chess and I wanted to give the trial a chance. Since I didn't know if I am even into chess and my money situation isn't too great since I just started my first job, I decided to just purchase the trial via paypal and cancelled right away. paypal today sent me a message that I am about to pay for a full year of the diamond plan even though everything is cancelled (I checked both on paypal and chess.com. Chess.com told me that my trial ends tomorrow) but I am still worried. What do I do? is it just a bug?

If you followed the step in https://support.chess.com/article/530-how-do-i-cancel-my-premium-membership-if-i-subscribed-with-paypal you should be fine.

Thank you Martin! I followed everything already and it was cancelled days ago so I guess everything will be fine!

They should give a free month trial, then email you in the 4th week to pay.

The site has done some one-month trials before. Though, like most subscription products, there's no reminder before the trial end.

If you give people 1 month to build a history, then they can assess the features. The 4th week reminder is good sales tactics. Then the users don't disruptions in the services if they like them.

If you only give a week, it's not enough time and charging someone's card for a year makes other people reluctant to sign up.

A trial can be for the monthly or yearly subscription, so as long as the member chooses the correct one they may want, or change before the trial ends, they're going to get the one chosen

The site also has a 30-day money back guarantee for first time subscriptions, so they can get refunded if they forget or get a month out and decide not to continue.

That was not what I was suggesting. I was suggesting people get a 1 month trial without having to give credit card details. Then, if they like, then they provide that information. Instead of getting refunded, they wouldn't be charged and the reminder email in the 4th week gives them a chance to then pay if they want the service.

How do you prevent someone from just creating new accounts every month to get access to all the features? The site does try different ideas out occasionally, so if something ends up increasing the number of people that stick with premium, that's what's going to be what they go with.

One-month with no requirements or restrictions is unlikely to improve the number of paid premiums, though I could be wrong. It's likely something like that has been or will be tried, at least on a smaller scale basis.
