Have you seen this?
paypal?

Yes. I don't think this is paypal asking me for a credit card. This is on the first page and there's not "paypal" message anywhere. It won't let me get past this without entering a credit card.

How could it be abuse if it's supposed to be free? The worst that could happen is there's no funds in the account when they are drawn upon at the end of the free period?
Ah well. Guess I can't take up the free offer then. It's poorly thought-out, though, because for the duration of the offer I can't opt out and take a paid subscription, either. Which means I can't actually sign up at all at the moment.

People could repeatedly register with new accounts to continuously use premium features like the database, tactics trainer, (especially) chess mentor etc.

I have a validated paypal account based on my bank account. From the paypal terms and conditions:
No Multiple Accounts. Should you register for more than one Personal Account, PayPal reserves the right to terminate all of your accounts and will restrict you from the system going forward. Users may register and hold one Personal Account and either one Premier or one Business Account.

No I had meant register with more than one chess com accounts one after the other, but I had misunderstood your post, I didn't realize you were asking why the credit card information was necessary if you already have a confirmed paypal account.
Maybe there's some sneaky way to abuse the system, like chess com can keep track of your credit card information but not your paypal account information, so that it's possible to keep registering different chess com usernames with the same (empty) paypal account but not the same credit card etc, but this is just guess talk.

Does PayPal support deferred payments in the same way that credit cards do? Presumably when you sign up for a 10-day free trial, you're actually agreeing to pay chess.com for one month, 6 months or a year's membership - AFTER the 10 free days have elapsed - UNLESS you explicitly cancel.
Also, PayPal is intended to hide identity (as well as bank or credit card details) behind the email address you use as the handle, whereas e-merchant systems based on credit cards generally require the name of the card holder.
I'm trying to sign up for the 10 day free trial, but it will only let me pay by credit card. Is there no option to use paypal?
