Penalty for abandoning a game due 'unfair' rating

Hello - If I go to play a game (45/45mins), and a competitor is flagged up to play, but our ratings are wildly apart, does one get penalised for abandoning the game before starting? Or maybe there's a 'polite' way of doing this?

Yes, if you abort too often, you lose the privilege;  use it sparingly if at all.  And abandoning games is considered bad form and a violation of the fair play policy with various penalties depending on how often you have been doing it.  Finding "slow play" opponents can be difficult.  Maybe you should join one of the slow play clubs?

hi ive never lost points for aborting a game unless its changed but if you do it a few times you get blocked from playing 45 for day or two. i dont mind how high theyr rated i just try to learn from it.

Thanks, guys - that all makes sense.

This is the largest of the slow play clubs and you have to jump through a few hoops to join it, but undoubtedly worth it if standard chess is what you want to play.
