I think there are too many threads in these forums admonishing people to behave the way we think they should along with the implied (or sometimes explicit) message that there's something wrong with them if they don't. These are often started with the ostensible purpose of promoting good sportsmanship and friendly relationships between players. I have to wonder if putting other members on the defensive and suggesting there's something wrong with the choices they make when they're just being who they are might not have the opposite effect.

Admittedly it's a little difficult to discern the original poster's exact intent, but if the word "epidemic" is at all indicative of what he was trying to convey it appears to be another attempt to lend undue gravity to what is really just nitpicking. The Black Plague and Yellow Fever were epidemics. Whether or not anyone has a profile picture is a combination of personal circumstance and choice unique to each individual here. The fact that those without a profile image can now go through forum topics and find a thread suggesting (I assume this is what is meant) that they're contributing to an epidemic that detracts from the popularity of this site bothers me more than looking at gray people icons.

Hey, that's just a picture of me in a blizzard wearing my "NO PHOTO" t-shirt!
oginschile

hmmm... does johnny the homicidal maniac represent me?

Sure.. why not.

blah, blah, blah, blah .... if no photo is the thing that bothers anyone more than anything else in life, then I'd suggest that they need to get a life

It's alright for some who are blessed with good looks (or think they are) to post their photos, but what about those who's physiognomy is not as attractive as it could be and is of more use to frighten the kids to school?
armiller
actually, i would, but i don't have any pictures of myself that fit the pixel limit (100x100, right?) and I'm too lazy to edit a pic. Plus, being "faceless" intimidates my opponents
kolechess

I have no idea and no interest in hurting my eyes trying to figure out what you tried to say....

KW,

It's a shame that you felt complelled to remove your personal stuff from the site - but your reasons are sound.

However, I think you can limit access to photo's, blogs and the like to 'friends' at chess.com.

Ned63

KW,

I'll only accept/issue a friend request if I've played the person and...

a) enjoyed some pleasant banter or

b) really enjoyed the game or

c) all of the above!

I've only ever received one friend request that has not satisfied my criteria above, and I have just ignored it.

On the downside, I might be missing out on a great friendship, but I think it's a bit creepy receiving a friend request from someone i just don't know.

Get to know someone over a few games first, you will soon know whether or not you are socially compatible.

I think having a picture or not is subjective. It depends on how you view things. I believe this is a chess site. Chess is life, so anything valuable to your life is part of your chess. I've read some post here before saying, "the people who plays the game makes the game interesting." I believe in that statement, but it's up to the person if he/she would like to put his/her picture. That is their freewill. It is also our freewill to look at the picture that others have posted.

I'm not a good-looking guy, but the great God has given me a face to show of. But then, I decided not to show the real me, instead I used a smiley, as it is a sign of peace.

Peace be with you all.

May the pieces be with you as well.

I am an old man, seventy -six years old and I don't look good in my photo. Maybe, Joe14, I should put up a curvaceous and sexy girl's photo to represent me. Would that make you happy?  We are here to play chess. I am still good at it, but I wonder how l can keep it up!
