The higher the level the longer the chess computer spends looking at moves. This allows it to look deeper. The longer it looks, the deeper it looks.

When playing the computer you can choose level 1 (easy) to 10 (hard).
How does the level affect the computer algorithm in terms of how powerful it is?
Is it just controlling the number of steps ahead that the computer can look ahead or does it affect other things?
