Everyone starts at 1200.  If you win a game, your rating goes up by a number of points, based on your opponent's rating, your rating, and a factor called "RD", which is the Rating Deviation.  Your RD changes over time, and it's based on how many games you play over a "rating period".  The rating period can vary from several hours to several days, and it is based on how many games are completed by all the players in the group or site.

Hope this helps!

How does it work that I won a game and was awarded 8 points but my opponent was deducted 23 points!!?

The site uses the Glicko rating system that includes a measure of rating uncertainty called the rating deviation (RD) value. Players with higher RD values have larger rating changes after games.

To explain in more simple terms : when you start to play for the first time a time control on chess.com, you get more points by winning than usual so chess.com can quickly adjust to a more accurate rating.
