Post-game analysis laptop icon thingy?

firstly.. apologies, I did spend some time looking for a thread on this but this is a huge forum + life is short! 😀 secondly... what does this icon do? i've lost, want to analyse my game, rewind, run through, find my error, choose another move, click laptop icon + the listed moves at the top of the screen are now preceeded by a number (eg +2.37). It looks like this is supposed to help me assess if my variation is a good idea but what is it? how does it work? what does the number mean? how should I be using this feature? what further questions should I be asking about this thing that I know not what it is + yet has suddenly caught my attention?!! 😊 thirdly ...thank you 😀

phudson

That is the evaluation of the position. +2.37 means white has an advantage equivalent to having 2.37 more than black. If the number is negative (-2.37) it means black has the advantage.

It's also good to note that the points themselves line up with the material values. So an advantage of +1 would be the equivalent of being a pawn up for white.

Good call Kirkwood. There was supposed to be a "pawns" in my post. I wonder where it went...Tongue Out

Ah!!! knew it had to be something cleverer than me! So... A noob could use this to discover where a game advantage switches? assess different options? next q... The number to the left of the evaluation is what? +... at the start of the game it doesn't say 0.00, does white always start with an advantage?

Kirkwood

White is up a tempo to start the game, so they always have the slightest edge before any move has been played :)

Computers are a great tool to go over the games that you've played, but it's also good to analyze them on your own to try and find the key ideas behind the position. It can also be good to have a coach (a higher rated player) go over the game with you! All of these tools are useful :)

many thanks Kirkwood + PHudson! I've started to analyse recently + now have a new tool, one day I might deserve a coach too! 😊 cheers!
