question, comment, possible complaint

I am curious about the process by which a forum topic is categorized. It seems to me that as a member I can categorize a topic one way and the chess.com powers-that-be can change that category as they see fit. While I don't particularly have a problem with that... it does seem a bit arbitrary at times... not in my circle of influence. What does bother me is that any topic categorized as Off Topic does not appear in the Most recent posts update box... why is that? Every other category will appear in that box when a comment is made in the respective category... except for Off Topic. I don't understand the reasoning behind that... would you please explain it to me? Thank you.

Karl... fire? Curiosity about something that makes no sense should not be considered playing with fire... I am sure there must be a logical reason... I just don't see it. :)

Karl perhaps said it wrong.....  I think he meant you are a hot looking lady with a burning curiosity and a playfulness with men that fans the flames of excitement!

Karl just tends to be a man of few words.....  (Unlike me who uses too many words!)

Well, Off Topic doesn't appear in the update box because that stuff tends to be either edgy or not chess related.  All other forum categories are chess- or site-related.

That is an interesting response. Why does it matter if the stuff is edgy or not chess related? I don't understand. Would you please elaborate? Thank you.

Mr. Woof... in my humble opinion, your use of words is par excellence... Wink

I don't see what the heck is so complicated. This is a chess site first, so chess-related stuff comes first.

And who cares if stuff gets reshuffled in the forums? What are we writing history here? This is all just gibber in the vacuous void of internet space.

There are some posts which, while people CAN say them  within the perameters of the site rules and terms of service, we would rather keep out of the spotlight, so to speak.

That sounds reasonable.  Thx for the explanation.

It's a little principle called Free Speech!

Chess site first?  Who said so?

This is not a free speech issue. There is no guarantee of absolute free speech. The 14th Ammendment prohibits congress from restrictng speech - and in practice this is not absolute. Consider the alien and sedition acts, for example.

A free press and limits on what congress can restrict exist largely to protect political free speech. Limits on artistic expression have long been accepted for things considered pornographic.

More importantly for this discussion, chess.com is a commercial endeavor. If anything, I think free speech rights pertain to Eric's right to control what he wants include as a part of his business and what he doesn't.

Debates about freedom of speech and freedom of expression are important in order to maintain a vital democracy. My personal belief is that there are very few situations that require censorship, and in this case we have to be careful that we aren't swearing in Eric's living room, so to speak.

Too many people consider "freedom of speech" as justification to say any stupid, hateful thing they want without any cnsequences from anyone ever. This trivializes an important concept that needs to be debated and defended in a thoughtful, well reasoned way.

I agree with this post 100%.

Freedom of speech was created for the political reasons, not so that people can troll without fear (Not saying that anyone on this thread is a troll. It's nicely civilized here)

Anyway, back to the OP:

There are some entertaining threads on Off Topic, but the 2 major reasons I know are 1. The mods move derailed or troll threads there and 2. It doesn't have much to do with actual chess. Mainly #2.

Moving a thread to Off-Topic can be the first stage in a range of graduated responses, somewhat along these lines ...

As we all know, defcon 1 leads to global thermonuclear war.  Shall we play a game of chess?

You have a range of responses available to you:

1. Ignore people who make idiotic or insulting remarks.

2. Block them.

3. Report them directly to chess.com (via the Help & Support link at the bottom of every page).
