hey everyone!
You can quote by hitting the 'QUOTE' button in the bottom right of somebody else's post. You can then edit the text to your liking.

After that you should click on Save & preview to have a look at what you wrote and give you a chance to correct any mistakes. Also, it gives you time to think about what you wrote before sending it. I am surprised at how many times I find a mistake when doing this.

I also ignore how people make that when they name another user in a message, that username appear as an active link that displays information when the mouse is on it, instead of plain text.
Can anyone give me an explanation or a nice link?
jornamon, the easiest method is to copy and paste someone's name from where it appears in the header of a comment they have posted.

You can add either web page links or email links to your document using the link button. The other button is the unlink button used to remove links, but keep the text in place. Here are your options:

I learn a lot form these forums, because this helped me, too. Thanks.
Thank you very much!!!
Ahaaa!! I can see the quote button in this thread. But it's not there always (!?) I was trying to quote someone here:
http://www.chess.com/news/fide-responds-to-carlsen-withdrawal-8729
But I can't find that button. Is it possible that it is only enabled in the forums but not when you comment news? It was driving my crazy. I was starting to think that I was stupid!!
And let's try to name a user: jornamon ... yep! it seems it worked artfizz, thanks!
jornamon, My wife and I visited Costa Rica and we truly enjoyed it and the people. I did not see anyone playing chess, however.

Actually I'm from Spain, but living now in Costa Rica. I was afraid of being unable to continue playing chess, but it hasn't been the case.
Within the San Jose Metropolitan area there are enough tournamets. I've only played in a couple of them, but mainly becouse I don't have enogh spare time.
Speaking with other chess players I noticed that outside the metropolitan area very little chess is played, and although the country is rather small, it can take long to reach the capital from certain places.
Of course, you don't find the same number of clubs and activities here as you could in a big city such as Barcelona (Spain), where I lived before, but it's ok, you can keep up with your hobby :)

Yes, that's it. You won't find the quote button in chess.com articles, columns, or blog entries, which is unfortunate, as they all allow for comments, and it is often a particular passage within a moderately lengthy piece that one might be commenting on.
Also, if a forum topic has been locked (no more comments allowed) by staff there will obviously not be any quote buttons available.
EDIT: Upon reflection, since the quoting mechanism on chess.com inserts the entire piece and requires deleting unwanted material (or results in a lot of extraneous material left in by lazy quoters), rather than allowing the person quoting to select a passage to be quoted, I guess it makes sense that they don't allow longer pieces like articles and columns to be quoted. But if chess.com made it so just selected passages could be quoted, it would improve the commenting process for everything, including forums.
I see Cystem_Phailure, but it's a pity, since posting in forums is quite similar to commenting, one should be able to quote too..
In those longer articles, you'll have to do your quoting by the old-fashioned copy and paste approach, and use something like a different color or font to distinguish the quoted material from your own comment. I know, it's barbaric, but hey, what are ya gonna do?

But sometimes it is worth it.
Thanks artfizz, those are all good summaries of both problems and desirable features. For all the great things on chess.com, the mechanisms of the forums (quoting, linking, etc.) are very clunky. I realize manpower and resources are limited and chess.com has other priorities, but it would be nice if the forums could begin to incorporate some of the handier features that have become available in other forums during this century.
Hi all,
I'm sure it must be easy, but I cannot find the option for quoting other people messages when posting something!!! Where is it?
