The rank only shows compared to other "active" players on the site. So the rank does not include members which do not play actively in the Online Chess. This is the reason the rank numbers are actually lower than the total number of registered members on the site.

Hey guys...I have a question on ranking. Chess.com has over 200,000 members(conrgats to Eric and all the staff!) but when you are shown your daily rank...its our of 45,000(aprox.) members...how does this work? are the 200,000 plus members further divided into batches based on rating...or.....?? :)
