Dude, no one's asking you to show what you look like. Your anime pfp is good enough.

Using TOR isn't a good option, I believe. Even for normal use, it's sometimes painfully slow... just because of the way it's designed, and given that many people complain about poor connectivity to live servers, it would only make things worse for them.
Most free VPN's add a lot of lag. Going for paid ones like Nord, Express VPN and Tunnel bear is better. Nord VPN adds like 20-30ms so one won't have a problem playing live chess.
I know.
But premium Vpn's like NordVPN costs literally over a $100 a year to have. For a university student like myself or just regular highschool kids you can't pay for that.
Also the main use of VPN is to surf online without the risk of your information being exposed. I actually have TOR and I use it, and I agree with you sometimes it's painfully slow, but it gets the job done.
Well, yeah that's true. I wonder if it will be cheaper to just make your own VPN with Digital Ocean, AWS or some other service like that nowadays.
The problem with free VPN's is that they eventually sell your data cause they have to pay for their servers and maintenance after all.
But using them is still better than no-VPN, IMO. 100% privacy today is impossible. Not gonna happen unless you want to live out in the woods somewhere.

Yeah, that's 100% true, especially today.
Privacy is an illusion we have, but at least that illusion has more strength with a VPN than not.
It's funny how we don't realise it tho. I guess people aren't educated on how companies sell your data and information to others, how there are cameras on your devices, how the government tracks your internet usage, how big tech companies are invading our privacy further with technology like Alexa and Siri.

Some people use dumb phones. Can you play chess on dumb phone ? Probably not.
Even using dumbphones won't help you escape surveillance, believe me.
Choosing privacy just doesn't mean using dumb phones. All you have to do on an individual level is to support companies/organizations that respect your privacy more. You don't have to make your life inconvenient.
Doing small things, such as supporting one software over another (like Mozilla Firefox over Chrome, or Duckduck go over Google, et cetera) and spreading the word totally works.
Using things like Alexa is a mistake though, in my opinion at least. The cons simply far outweigh the pros. There are open-source options out there, but never used any of 'em.

bc im like only 13 and like im not playing with some 50 yr old creep
So people who are over 50 are creeps? 🤔
One day you will be a creep too then? You may have already played against an older guy without even knowing.
Those comments are a lil’ shallow.
Nothing wrong with a game of chess.

Chess.com is on the Internet. Do you give away private and personal data on other sites? No. Chess.com is no exception.

i feel like its fine to give out your age and your first name, and maybe your country or state
Ha ha. Not funny.

people are weird, idk why someone would have an issue with playing chess against someone older.
It's funny how people are so scared about showing their face or name on a chess site but most of them have multiple social media accounts displaying all of their information all of the time 😆

Good point.
it's common knowledge.
VPN's have been used for a long time now. If you don't know any programs, a free one is a program called "tor".
Also, people have experienced what has happened to them by exposing their information. You said you're 13, so I'm assuming you either watch twitch.tv or know what it is. Many streamers just by showing their face, or their homes, get people who do prank calls to the police to get them swatted, or call in a bomb threat, etc.
The internet is not inhibited in any way, and because you are accessing a server with a hard drive, it allows for great manipulation. There are people on the internet who can do things with computers and small bits of information that you couldn't believe.
