Sporadic Sounds and Popup Windows During Game Play

During gameplay, there have been some random sounds (there is no video anywhere visible on the screen, so I have no idea what causes the sounds), and once even an advertisement opened causing my gameboard to be switched to a new window. This is particularly frustrating as I mostly play blitz games, where time is precious. For technical details: I play using full-screen mode in Google Chrome (version 36.0.1985.125) on a Mac running OSX 10.9.4. Any idea what could be causing these annoying popups?
