Spread The Word About These Virus Websites.

virus was found on one of the ad networks. again, this isn't our fault, it's the fault of ads all over the internet :( ugh. i hate it. that ad with the virus was all over thousands of websites this morning. we actually were helpful in finding it and getting rid of it. that is why everyone should always be running antivirus and spyware protection.

Hi erik, thanks for the work.  I'm curious, though, if the admins for this site have the ability to control what kinds of scripts, or which sites are allowed to run scripts, within the ads.  I am using a firefox extension (NoScript) that enables me to choose from which sites I allow scripts to run. Is it possible for you to explain which of the following sites that want to run scripts in my I can permanently trust when viewing pages on chess.com: chess.com, chesscomfiles.com, pubmatic.com, and meebo.com?   I am assuming for now that it should be chess.com and chesscomfiles.com.  Thanks for any pointers!

the domains that we use are chess.com, chesscomfiles.com. meebo.com is for the chat bar. pubmatic.com is for ads.

This is deadly

lol the only safe browser is google chrome, the recent pwn2own competition is a prime example of this. Chrome was the only browser to not get owned during the process, and currently google is buying exploits for its browser for $1337 each, i loled when i saw this number too. But yeah. :D

I appreciate that. I just want to add as a warning to others that I was running with full antivirus and spyware protection and it still happened to me. Even though I am a "technical" person, it still took me hours to get rid off. :-(
I saw a number of messages by people saying they had the virus (the fake antivirus) but just turned off or reset the computer, changed username etc. That is not enough. The virus installs itself so that each time a program (exe) starts, it becomes active. I managed to remove most of it with Malwarebytes but still had a struggle constantly killing the vrirus process in the Windows Task Manager. After that I could run Spybot (I couldn't before) and my usual antivir to get rid of the rest.

As a premium member, you shouldn't be seeing ads

If you own a Mac. you may think that your computer cannot get a virus. I Researched this and found this. it can happen to you to.

Just thought that this may help

CPawn,

Thanks for the links, but I have a question about NoScript:  I just installed it and noticed that viewing pages on chess.com involves allowing scripts from no less than four domains: chess.com, chesscomfiles.com, pubmatic.com, and meebo.com.  Is it safe to trust all four of these permanently, since I view these pages all the time, or should I start getting used to selectively choosing sites when I want some kind of behavior?  Is there any way of knowing what the scripts are supposed to do, so I can make a better decision?   Thanks for any pointers!

Noscript requires some getting used to, and some time to actually use it.  Simply youll have to read what each script does and then either allow or block.

I was making a move in one of my games, and the page closed, this stupid "My Computer" page opens, and says that I have 150 viruses and trojans and that I need to install a program to clean my system.  As for e-mailing the source code, I may be an electronics tech for the big chip maker, but I don't know how to do that!  The game I was playing was this one:  http://www.chess.com/echess/game.html?id=29974458

This same message has happened to me numerous times (and I have filed the necessary complaints)--I also run Web root AV. Basically you can not tell what script  or ad causes this as it automatically tried to download a program onto my computer when the malware and AV's kick in. I do not use meebo but my feeling is if this playing or reading forums on this site puts my computer in danger than I will not be on this site.

I am no expert (and no offense) but I think Erik's excuse is kind of lame as no other site I visit causes these problems to my computer.

I must say the same for Linux.

I have Windows 7 and Linux (Ubnutu).  At the momment I'm dual booting between the two.  After I get the hang of Ubnutu, I might ditch crapy Windows7.  On my Windows 7, I don't even use Mircosoft products, I use Open Source.

Amen svetla.  I also dual boot between XP and Linux.  I much prefer Linux, and my girls prefer XP simply because its easier to use.

I would like to warn anyone who thinks linux is an unassailable fortress: my own experience shows it is not (I stopped leaving my computer on overnight and connected to the Internet after it got rooted).  It's better than many alternatives, but someone who uses firefox on linux, for example, is vulnerable to all the same exploits as anyone else running firefox on a different OS.  It may true that the extra security of linux file and group permissions keeps the machine from being completed compromised, but the files in the user's personal filespace, which often comprises the "interesting" information on the computer anyway, has no more protection on linux than any other operating system.

Microsoft does not send out those messages...it's someone pretending to be microsoft.
