This is quite normal. The player who creates the challenge may choose the starting position (from a long list) for a "thematic" game.
There also exists thematic tournaments, so look carefully before signing up or accepting challenges.

Howdy:
I have just encountered an interesting situation. I started a new game by accepting an open challenge. When I was notified that it was my move (I am black) I was surprised to find that the game was already in progress and that there had been 3 moves made. Has anyone seen this before, it is a rated game and I'm not sure what I should do.
