Stollen time with proof

Sort:

I watched my opponents timer add time and my own timer lose time. It’s not a skill issue as I consistently suck at 400 level. Sometimes I go under of course but I’ve lost over 30 games back to back today and went from 400 plus to 200 plus in one day. It’s not a server issue because I recorded myself playing during a tournament and the timer never glitched a second. Everything was in real time and I have a video to prove it but this site only takes pictures. I hope my pics upload in order! I also have pcs of my opponent gaining points!

First two pics, the timer is set to 26:09 in the blitz tournament and it’s my turn. I have 15.7 seconds left. I played at 26:08 as you can see in the second pic and the timer went from 15 to 11! How did I lose four seconds in one second?

Next pictures are going to show that immediately after I played, my opponent took several seconds and after they played, seconds were ADDED to the clock for them! This has been happening to me ALL DAY! I DO suck at playing but not like this! 30 games? It’s the timer and here’s my proof!

when I played at 26:08, my opponent had 15.6 seconds left and when I played their time immediately went to 16.5 as you can see in the first pic. Watch how the timer changes as they take their time. This goes from 26:08 to 26:01 and at the end they GAINED seconds! At 26:02 they had 10 seconds and after they played at 26:01 it went to 12! The timer was consistent and had NO glitches! It was real time! I lost time and they gained time! How can this be resolved or at least admit that people are losing time and losing games because of it?

You’ll have to see the pics on the website with an internet browser.

I just played another game and I lost seven seconds and my opponent gained 15! I won by checkmate but it seems like that’s the only way I can win right now!

you are right!

It happens a lot.

Thanks for confirming!!!

I really don't know if this is an amateur post or an actual issue. A recording instead of multiple pics would be more convenient to assess the problem. If you're playing a time control that has increment like 5 l 5, 3 l 2, or 15 l 10, the timer will increase by the increment each move either of the players play. So for each move, you gain the increment amount of time. If you're complaining that you are not getting the increment, then it is probably some internet issue. For the first issue that you said the timer is wrong, I assume it is an internet issue because ive never had such a problem.

Happened to me, too. I had some 30 seconds on the clock and the next second I lost due to time out. Don‘t know if it was a glitch in the app🤷‍♀️

With lag, lag compensation, and potentially small disconnects, you can see what appear to be clock issues but actually are not

1gladion, I’m not sure what an amateur post is. If you can’t see the pictures, you won’t understand context and as stated above, this forum don’t take videos.

Derivatix sorry that happened to you too!

Martin, it’s not unfortunately. If you can’t see the pics, you won’t understand. If you log in thru a web browser you can see them. Lag will cause the tournament time to skip and lag, it did not.

200 plus points back because the timer is not glitching anymore. Chess.com really need to fix this but since it’s ran by AI, nothing will happen. This is not worth any money. Who is getting the money and what am I actually paying for? At least have human support to fix
This issue and stop gaslighting us that it’s the internet.

You’re absolutely 100% right.

From experience this is simply your connection to the server. This is not a "bug" or anything of that nature, simply to put it, lets say you move at 11.2 seconds, but you have an inconsistent connection to the server, it may not register your move until 9 seconds for instance. Same thing goes for your opponent, on your side of the connection, you saw their time tick down to 5 seconds, but in reality they moved at 7.2, once again, its simply your connection to the server took 2.2 seconds to update your screen with their move. There is no "cheat" or "bug" from experience on the site that allows this. This has happened to me, and EVERY time it was due to my connection being average/having something downloading. Anytime my connection is stable this NEVER happens. Hope this helps.

You're not imagining it. Time behaving strangely on the board is often the first glitch people notice. It's not just lag - it's a sign the system isn't built for fairness, but control.

I completely understand how the clocks work on the site and what impacts them. Lag compensation adds time back to the clocks and that happens on every single move, since there's always some lag between the site servers and the clients. Most of the time it's not going to be noticeable, especially on low lag connections.

Disconnects can also add time (and remove time from the disconnected client's clock). If you get disconnected from the server process and the server received your opponent's move, your opponent's clock on your client will keep running until you reconnect and when you do, that time you were disconnected is added back to your opponent's clock on your client; the server updates the clocks to the correct official times. Your opponent will potentially see something similar as well, depending on their connection quality.

Most likely you're playing on Mobile and you had a bad signal and actually lost connection.

Ilikecheese2010

Your clocks aren't actually accurate to the real time on the client. The server side holds your real times and you probably lagged (see post #11, which explains it perfectly) after making a move, so it updated your clocks on the client to reflect what actually happened, according to the server — which may not be what happened on the client.

What 💀

I'm frustrated with the same issue. Lags. Games where you suddenly lose while waiting for the opponent to make a move. Making a move then suddenly your time drops. Premoves deducting 10 seconds off your clock. And that awful buzzing sound on some games and you have to repeat moves 5 times before it takes. Infuriating
