Sudden Game Abandoneds

I thought you only lost the game automatically if you DISCONNECTED for five minutes. You can think for longer, I'm sure.

No not really.  There was a minor insurrection in the forums a year or two ago when Chess.com instituted a maximum "thinking" time for each type of chess.  Standard it's 5 minutes max, don't quote me on blitz but I think it's 2minutes, maybe 3...

Somebody just posted the "official times" in a message from Jaclyn but I've already forgotten the blitz times....Frown  It's possible my short term memory isn't what it used to be...

Hmmm...I'm sure I've played games on standard live chess where my opponent has thought for more than five minutes. I wonder if Kansha could settle this discussion?

It's 5 minutes for the games I play.

For Standard Chess the waiting time is 5 minutes.

For Blitz Chess the waiting time is only 2 minutes.

For Bullet it is 1 minute or the alloted time left.

Here's the official confirmation of 5 minutes for Standard, 2 minutes for Blitz and 1 minute or alloted time left for Bullet. See screen print below

Couldn't get the screen print, tokyojim, but this is what I was talking about.
EDIT  You could check yourself in the live chess forum.  The thread is "fair play policy"

In the last year I've played someone who thought for so long I assumed they had walked away from the computer sulking because I was beating them, in order to make we wait for my victory. They were inactive for well over five minutes (over twenty in one case) and did not forfeit the game. How can that have happened if the rules have changed to make it so that you can't think for more than five minutes a turn?

I can't play live chess here any longer as the pieces cannot be selected to move, yet my laptop has no issues with other sites. I guess that's that then.

I've noticed that during rated games in live chess (and I usually play 30|0 standard), the server will boot my opponent out if he/she waits for longer than about 5 minutes, but that in unrated games that doesn't happen.  Maybe that's the deal?

Avatar of TheKasparovOfChess

I was talking about rated games, actually. In rated games I've had opponents think for more than five minutes without getting booted by the server.

I believe that when I played chess in yahoo games a while age the cut off time for making a move was 10 minutes. After that the server assumed the game was abandoned.I think that is a more reasonable time.

Huh.  That's wierd.  And you're sure the long wait times aren't the result of playing long games, being (unintentionally) unrated, or anything like that?

Avatar of TheKasparovOfChess

No. The games were rated. I remember because the other guy stopped moving his pieces with over twenty minutes left and I wondered if it was a deliberate strategy to make me get bored and resign. The clock ran down to zero and I won.

Jeez :|  I guess a win is a win, though.  Hate to get it that way, but when they're unwilling to resign, whatcha gonna do?

Grrr.

The same bug just has happened with my game and btw i've already encountered several similar abandones from my opps, was surprised. Those now I suppose likely to meet the same issue.
