time-out percentage

I have timed-out in one of 31 games played in "Online Chess". Because it was my most recent game, and I keep my concurrent game count very low, my time-out % now prevents me from entering tournaments.

Would someone please adjust my % so that this is no longer a problem?

Thank you.

Yes, timing out on 1 of 4 played in the last 90 days gave you a 25% timeout ratio.

I don't know if there is anything you can do other than wait or play some individual games to lower your timeout percentage.  Just 7 games completed would get your percentage below 10% again.

That could mean 12 months for me; I don't play more than 3 games at once.

It can't be more than three months. They only use the last 90 days.

So 90 days after that one time-out, I go to zero % whether I play or not? That's not so bad. Still, it seems a harsh penalty for a single forfeit.

if your opponent play slowly as you he has 25% of his games where his opoenet lost with time out....not funny for him

GM_Phrostbyte

What does "timeout" mean?

wanmokewan

Losing on time in an Online(correspondence) chess game.

GM_Phrostbyte

Oh, ok.

Why do you assume I play slowly? I am able to play very quickly because I play very few concurrent games. When my opponents have also been quick, our tournament games have finished in 2-3 weeks (months ahead of the slowest finishers). This single forfeit, my only forfeit in 5 years on chess.com, was due to a family circumstance. Your post is prejudiced.

Oh look, my time per move (4h) is shorter than yours (4.5h).

Perhaps they should implement something so that your time-out percentage only stops you joining tournaments if it's from timing out on more than 3 games or something.

I agree.

Why would you only play 3 concurrent games?  Mostly live chess?  Just curious.

I prefer deep study of openings, positions, and tactics. I come away from the games knowing much more than if I play quickly with brief study.

What online tournaments do you enter where you only play no more than 3 games at one time? You could contact the tiurnament director and ask him to adjust the time out %.You could host your own tournaments and set any confitions you prefer.

I have a similar train of thought and totally agree.  I keep mine to about 10 games, mainly so I can play live chess....But I play the livechess at icc.

But yea, you might as well just play live blitz if your just flipping though games, with a 30 second look at each game prior to moving.

Tournament with sections of 4 where you play one game at a time with each opponent, these give 3 games at once. "4(1)->1", "4(1)->2", for example.

Does a tournament director have the option of changing the time-out %? It isn't displayed as one of the tournament's conditions, so I assumed it was immutable. I'll see if I can find out.

Edit: I can't find out. My class of membership is no longer allowed to host tournaments. Perhaps you could try it and see if you can set the % ?

You can set the maximum allowed timeout percentages to up to 100% (as in anyone can join). It's under advanced options when you create an event.

The default timeout percentage is 10%.

Most tournaments on here are 10% max, though some are 5% (usually non-vacation 1 day events or for certain groups like EFCP or similar) and some can be at high as 100% (as in everyone) but the highest I noticed are generally 15-20. The couple events I joined with 100% timeouts (such as any of the Baku events) had so many timeouts in the first round, it was a bit ridiculous.

Example of a tournament I ran/am running which had a 100% timeout allowance. http://www.chess.com/tournament/quads-1-vacation-on-no-timeout-max

Use any chess.com official tournament for 10% (though i think the fast knockouts at 5% or 0% which makes sense)

Here's an image of the full tournament creation page (outside of making custom trophies, and one other minor option)
