I tried to log on during the recent (about an hour ago) downtime and was presented with the following pop-up:

So, what's going on? Chess.com software out of date?

Shoot -- I misread the title.  I was hoping for a surprise massage.

Odd message, which version of java do you have ?

Echecs I just noticed your blitz rating is the same as my turn based - does that mean you see in seconds what takes me 3 days?

Avatar of PrawnEatsPrawn

 Java(TM) Platform, Standard Edition
                        Runtime Environment
                             Version 6

That's what it says in the "Read me" file.

Mine shows 1.6.0_24   (the latest is _25)

Yes! For example, my bullet is 2100. So I can, in milliseconds, see an expert's thinking.

I'm just kidding, the real reason is that in blitz you see less moves, but BOTH players see less.

So, mine is earlier than yours Kohai, and by the looks of it the exact version the pop-up requires. Very strange.

Avatar of TheGrobe

Don't you mean trolls?

Avatar of kohai

More so as i don't see any boxes saying i require an earlier version.

Okay, solved it. There was (inexplicably) a Java file missing from my installation. I've removed Java entirely and then installed the latest version. Strange that this should occur for no reason that I can fathom, after working well for so long.

p.s. Good work Kohai.... your sensible questions put me on the right track.

Chrome has a feature that will block Java sites if your version is not the current one - but the error message that pops up is different from the one posted.

I'm on Firefox 4.0 but I think the browser choice was immaterial in this case. I built my own system so there's not much in the way of support literature and *stuff* happens. Laughing

This is what I got when I opened chess.com during site maintainance :o
