Yes its possible :)
If you upgrade to monthly platinum its at no cost as your membership credit already covers this. Same applies to a monthly diamond upgrade.
If you go onto this page click on the membership upgrade you want then proceed to the next page, it will tell you what the outstanding balance will be, if there is one.
So how would i be able to upgrade to diamond for a month then go back to gold?

By clicking on the gold membership on the 'premium membership upgrade page. However, if you upgrade to diamond yearly, you won't be refunded for the extra yearly Diamond payment you made, instead the monthly Gold may extend for 2+ years with the Diamond credit they still have left.
This is a huge problem. I started the free trial period and ended the diamond yearly membership before the expiration date. Come to find out that a day later it charged me $99. 99 and I can't resume the membership without paying again. I left with the standard chess.com app and and the loss of a hundred dollars. Please help as soon as possible

You didn't lose your $100. Just need to contact Billing directly. Not saying the forums don't help folks, they do, but this is Amateur Hour and you need the pros.

Hi everyone :)
I have recently signed on to my second year of chess.com gold membership (thanks chess.com for the excellent services provided)
My question is: Is it possible for me to upgrade my account to platinum/diamond membership for a month and then return to the gold membership I have already paid for? I am on school summer holidays for ~6 weeks, so this is (hopefully) my main time of chess improvement, hence best services=most improvement (i hope) :) Also, would this upgrade be at a lower cost since i have already paid for the month of gold? e.g. $10.50 rather than $12.99 ($12.99 of 1 month of platinum minus 1 month of gold on yearly rate)
