The answer is in your own hands:
Firefox and Adblock Plus.
Don't moan, fix it.
you have got to get a premium membership brother. it stops all the advertising garbage. much more peaceful.

I don't have a credit card!
It's not a popup! It's a ad that is stuck on the page!
Do you see the application is called "Adblock"?
oh really? It actually removes all ads?
Yes! that's why I suggested it.
Any ads that are not removed automatically can be removed manually via a right-click option, on top of the offending ad.
Enough talk now, try it.

He may not be using that browser.

This is probably most practical advice yet.
My guess is that with the OP's original technical challenges (not of his own - Net access at home and temporarily on public PC, I assume) he would benefit with the most inexpensive available membership over the long haul. The other benefits come into play where ad-blocking does not.
Recently, I have noticed that a ad for "A free Wal-Mart gift card" is popping up. It actually has sound and "talks to you". The last thing a chess player wants is sound to annoy them. Chess players need consentration! Plus, their "free gift card" is just a scam! I'm 99% sure of it. Why would I be getting the same message over and over again? I know that Chess.com needs ads, but voice ads are too far.
You need to concentrate to spell concentration right.
I wholeheartedly agree. Look, erik, I understand how the ad system works. If everyone used Adblock and Noscript, the companies advertising here would notice that they were getting no traffic, and we wouldn't be able to have free memberships. So that's why I gladly keep the ads on, at least for the principle of it.
But ones that scream at me make me block all ads for a long time.
