What does 'Following' someone actually do?

Sorry if this is an obvious question, but what does following someone actually mean?

If someone doesn't write any blogs is there any reason to do it? Do they know when that person is on-line, for instance?

Martin_Stahl

When you follow someone you will receive a notification anytime they create new content. Such as a blog or forum topic (or articles if they can post those). You won't see replies to topics created by other members or anything else.

You may also see when they create a Daily tourney but I'm not 100% positive on that.

Thanks Martin. So they won't see you if you don't write anything, they"ll see a new forum topic but not if I reply to topics?  OK. Thanks!

Martin_Stahl

Yeah, if you follow someone and they don't create any content, nothing happens.

Heather_Stephens

If you change your photo, does that count as creating new content?

Or if I reply to a topic that I created myself, like this one?

Martin_Stahl

No, changing things on your profile doesn't create an update. Replying to one of your topics doesn't cause an update either. Though, if someone is that interested in you they might just follow your topic after you post it grin.png

Thanks!

Sorry for my stupid question, but my internet knowledge is small! Once I followed someone, I got a notification in my e-mail account. But since I  don`t check my e-mails all the time, I was very often too late for the notification. Is there a way to somehow make these notifications pop up on the computer screen , so I don`t have to check my e-mails all the time? Any answers are appreciated!

Will the other person (who is not a friend in chess.com) know that we are following him/her?

I have 13 followers and have no idea who they are, so I doubt anyone would know. I clicked on the followers to see if it gave me a name list, but there is nothing to click.

If a topic is created by your friend, you'll get that initial notification. By default, created topics are automatically followed by the poster, so they'll get notifications on any replies.

Otherwise, if they reply to something and do not have the setting on to follow automatically or manually unfollow if they do, then they will not be notified if you post on that content.
