Windows 10, Chrome and .JPEG image files

Here is a question I cannot find any results for on my own, no matter how many ways I phrase my search:

I have previously uploaded images that are in .JPEG file format to this website. I uploaded them with 8.1, but that shouldn't mean squat: a .JPEG is a .JPEG...

Flash forward to both a new computer and a new laptop, both Windows 10. If I try to download those same exact images, ones I have, on 8.1, downloaded time and again to repost to the next page (Guess What The Picture Is Threads), half of them download in an unrecognized format (.jpegx). The other half download just like they should, as .jpeg images that not only the entire spread of internet browsers recognizes but also any photo program on my computer recognizes, too. So what gives?

The common theme is that they download with "php" as the first letters of the file name ("phpfk1lnh.jpeg" is an example), and for an icon, instead of a preview, they show up a blue and white icon with a mountain in it, unrecogizable to all photo programs including Paint, and it doesn't matter if you rename the file extension. One even saved as a .jpeg but still acted the same way, as an unrecognizable image.

This is with Windows 10, both of them updated, with the common software like java and adobe updated as well.

Any solutions for this bizarre issue?

Thanks in advance!

Does the problem persist in both V2 and V3 ?Undecided   Like you said, In theory it shouldn't make a difference at all. But Erik was gonna go with no pictures in V3 a long time ago. Then he changed his mind.

It does't just happen with Chess.com, though that is my primary concern - It happens during Google image searches as well, albeit sporadically.

Update: A friend had me try Firefox and the problem images downloaded correctly. It seems to be restricted to Chrome, Internet Explorer, that weird browser that comes with Windows 10 (Vista?) and Opera.

My computer guy tells me Windows 10 is a hybrid compilation of 7 + 8

NomadicKnight

Sounds about right... They brought back features from 7 that make it act more like Windows, not the "tablet-like" experience of 8. I miss XP...

So how about this weird issue with images not downloading in their true format???

I Googled, "How Do You Load JPGE Pictures in Windows 10"   and this is what came up;  http://www.tenforums.com/general-discussion/12221-windows-10-will-not-open-pdf-jpeg-files.html      I didn't read it all. The answer may be somewhere in there, or other threads. I clicked the 1st thing that came up.

That one is a no-go as well. I also tried enabling file extensions after another tip, same story. They download as essentially nothing. Meanwhile Firefox downloads them no problem. But I like Chrome.......

Same here. I'm happy you got a new computer but I'll be on 7 for a couple of years.  This guy is very tech savvy and knows a lot more than me. Send him a message; http://www.chess.com/members/view/EscherehcsE

Thank you for the responses. Apparently using Firefox eliminates the problem... but I like Chrome... Cry

As for software, do you happen to know exactly what I should download? And I already tried opening in various programs - it behaves as if I downloaded nothing at all, just a black screen and an error message that the file type is not recognized.

What strikes me as odd is that it is completely random. Take my threads, Guess What The Picture Is... I have uploaded a ton of images to those threads under the old Windows 8.1 computer, but now 50% work and 50% don't? All were cropped using Microsoft Paint and saved as .jpeg - So I'm at a loss as to the reason for this even happening...

Unfortunately, I'm completely ignorant of this issue. I did find this link about the jpegx file format:

http://www.file-extensions.org/jpegx-file-extension

A quote from the above link:

"Egis is data protection application for Microsoft Windows used to protect personal data against unauthorized viewing. Egis is also known as Acer eDataSecurity that is bundled with new Acer computers."

I would guess that this is something you could disable or uninstall if it's a problem for you.
