Abandonment!

I am new on this site. I have run into the problem of very rude people just abandoning a game they are losing rather than resigning. This causes me to have to wait for the game clock to run down to zero. I just finished a game where the opponent (no naming or shaming, please. mod) abandoned with 25 minutes left. So I just sit there and twiddle my thumbs. I can't leave in case they decide to play. I guess there isn't much I can do about it. Doesn't happen very often. It shouldn't ever happen.

Skwerly

when folks abandon games like that chess.com penalizes them for violating the fair play policy.  ya can't stop them all, but chess.com gets a ton of them!  :)

Hey model14, had the same problem about four times now in my first week on this site (by the way, am loving Chess.com - great site!!)  Just block 'em then they can't be paired with you again (Privacy Settings).  Dunno what the deal is with those jokers, maybe they are hoping you will get bored and resign - some people should just stick to tiddleywinks if they can't handle losing!

In the last week, I have now had to block well over a dozen people for rudeness, offensive multiple draw offers (in a losing position), or most commonly time outs.  It seems that online play is worse than before.  I used to play online over 10 years ago, but I don't remember so much wholesale abuse.

Chess.com just lagged me out with 10 seconds left on a winning match... this is unacceptable and horrible coding. Hire a professional.

This has never happened to me but I am sorry it happened to you. However I have had no problem with this site and found it quite useful.

Original post was just about 8 years ago.I can tell F4 must have been really upset to bring it back to life (post #5). I don't play short time control games, but I think I can see how upsetting that must have been.

Probably about 20% of the games end this way if I'm in a winning position.

Imagine now that you lose 50-100 points of rating each abandonment. Rating level 0 players can abandon back and forth and leave respectful players out of it.

I'm uninstalling and only playing over the board. If this wasn't a problem, I would be a diamond member.

I'm curious, because I have had people let the clock run out instead of resigning on several occasions. Is that considered rude enough to report someone, or should I just block them?

I am on this daily game in which the oponent just tags themself as "in vacation mode" so the time doesn't run out.
Didn't even know this was a thing.
They did their last move 2 or 3 days ago, and started doing this because (I think) I have mate.

It's really frustrating. Never thought some people would be so petty to actually do this in a daily game. I've reported, but does reporting actually work?

My oponent is still doing this since.

Yesterday they had 65 minute to make their move then tagged themself as "on vacation" and now has 4 hours left to move.

This is such a stupid setting... No one should be able to put themself as "in vacation" if 1) you didn't do ALL your moves in ALL your daily games you're currently playing and 2) if you constantly turn this setting on and off in a short period of time. Also consider adding a timewindow (maybe a couple of days) in which people cannot start new daily games after the "on vacation" period ends.

I know daily games aren't important, but why have them if salty people can just abuse it to indefinetly postpone games just because they're losing?
