Hi,When you play someone then click on the players name it will take you to his homepage where you will see an option to add him as a friend, your opponent may or may not accept but that is one of the ways you can ask.

Click on the user-name of the user your want to add as a friend. like, http://www.chess.com/members/view/trurook
On the right, you'll see a link where it says "add to my friends list." click on it to send an offer.
