Or maybe he just got up from a power nap...

The round started at 3,  he probably woke up at 2:40 & was like  "oh shhh...  to heck with looking for that dang comb, gotta go!"

I fail to see what's so special about soju. It's just another alcoholic drink.

Keeping social drinking and chess separate is very important for any chess player. The two don't mix because to play chess you need to have a clear mind. A few beers with friends and a few games is one thing but I doubt professional players go near alcohol during tournaments or possibly in the weeks leading up to tournaments for really serious players.

In my country there is a problem with alcohol because it's not seen as something to have socially like a glass of wine with a meal and people drink until they fall over. It should be made clearer that alcohol is the most dangerous of all addictive substances to withdraw from and just a month of daily drinking can cause physical dependence which can lead to Delirium Tremens and some very unpleasant symptoms.

I wonder how chess would be while on shrooms......

For someone who has struggled with drink in the past, I can say chess encourages me to not drink due to boredom. If you want to play your BEST chess and improve, don’t drink on the day you want to play and don’t get smashed the day before.  It definitely does not help with cognitive function, and I would’ve thought that was quite obvious to anyone who has ever had a drink.

Alcohol for any reason is never, never a good idea. Alcohol destroys families and people and addiction is quick and near...

I'm going through a detox programme working towards a stay in rehab and then living a life of sobriety. It would be too dangerous for me to detox at home and will need medical supervision. I also see chess as a way to avoid alcohol because I prefer a cup of tea during a game. I've not played for a while because I have a few things going on and let a lot of games time out which I feel guilty about and my rating has taken a dent but will be playing again soon.

He should win an award for the coolest hair of all the top GMs.  That's the "at least I made it here" hairdo.

I was at 30 units a day which is enough to kill most people and that's where it's heading.

Alcohol dulls the senses...for that reason alone it would be a bad idea to combine it with chess. The other reasons it's a bad idea are too legion to list.

I spent an entire summer in the mid eighties tripping on shrooms. I never attempted chess then but I imagine it would be something like Alice in Wonderland...red queen and all.

Well I don't find it helpful it is a bad idea for me playing a serious game but fun on a casual occasion

I just went golfing first time this year.   Also scored a Titleist driver for five dollars at a garage sale.  score.
