I think it depends on whether or not you've won or lost when you say "gg".
People who win are generally friendlier and people who lose sometimes misunderstand the intention.
Americans seem more friendly here

I'm a Malaysian and I usually say a few nice words in the chat box. Or simply say 'gg' at the end of a game. Usually, it's only Americans who respond kindly to me. I don't know whether this is simply because other people from other countries have difficulty understanding English but I would just like to say that chess would a whole lot more fun with friendliness.
