Please help.I have been on this site for a week now and was trying to build up my rateings.I have just played a game which was classed as a stalemate the pieces i had left on the board were 6 pawns king queen rook and a bishop to my opponents king my time ran out leaving my opponent with 3 seconds on his clock.Unbelieveably I got -74 of my rateings. Can naybody explain to me how this can be.Thank you in advance Dave

Your clock ran out, your opponent had no material to mate with, so it's a draw. You drew a player ranked almost 300 pts. below your provisional rating, therefore you lose a lot of pointsSmile

Your rating will stop fluctuating so wildly once you have played more games

What I'm confused about is why you're annoyed -- you got away with a draw when you could easily have lost due to timeout if your opponent had been left with more material.

You should be grateful that you timed out and only lost 74 points because it was a draw.

Time management is a critical element of the game.  You may have been substantially up both materially and positionally, but that does not necessarily mean that you were winning.

a chess player should know about the rules of the game. u do not have to be a chess arbiter though.chess is governed by comprehensive rules on how to play, how to win,to conduct yourself during the game, etc.the rules talk about legal and illegal moves. while it is legalistic,it however leaves much to understanding principles and interpretations.

what i don't understand, though,is why in chess.com.,insufficient mating materials will win against opponent who has no time left,e.g.,1st player has only one knight or one bishop left + 10 secs on his clock;2nd player has a pawn left & his time expired.  instead of draw, 1st player wins.please explain.

Because the second player has a pawn, and the first player a knight(or bishop), then it is possible for the first player to checkmate the second player.
