Anyone else with a similar rating decline.

My rating has declined by roughly about 100 points since January 2020 (from 1190 to 1090) This has happened before but I was always able to bring my rating back up.  Not anymore.  Yet my ranking for all Chess.com players is still hovering around 78- 80% it was in January of 2020 despite the fact my rating declined about 9%.

Has anyone else noticed a similar decline in this time period?

Has Chess.com adjusted something in their software that made this happen (I doubt it.)

I've had similar thoughts in the past, but not recently.  To be honest, even though I've considered it, I really think it is just me and the randomness of the opponents that I'm paired with.

I would also recommend working with a coach.  A coach can point out improvements that would take a person a long time to figure out working alone (this doesn't even include the frustration of figuring it out on your own).  I recommend my coach, Bennett Joseph.  I meet with him online once per week for an hour.  It helps a lot.  He's on chess.com as ModernPraxis.

I had a ranking of 1350 before 2020, and now it's below 1200 for the first time in my adult life.

I have ups and downs in rating that go well above 100 points. To get it back though I always have to do some work, get lots of puzzles done, have a look at some of my games etc, never expect your rating to always 'be there', without working on your game it will go down without it. Have a look at your openings, might be a couple lines your not too good on anymore.

I've noticed it as well.  My personal belief is that the COVID-19  / Beth Harmon bump has ended, so only people who are more serious are still around.  Lots of newbies push up ratings, while losing the newbies pushes them back to where they should be, or maybe even a ratings deflation.

I think, more specifically, when you have more newbies who come in at low ratings, they improve more quickly (i.e., it's much much easier to go from 200 to 500 than from 1400 to 1700) and leave the system more often, particularly when you have buzz from Queen's Gambit / a bump in activity from COVID-19. Probably also a general issue in the system where more people are gaining large amounts of rating than losing large amounts, since you can learn and go up a lot but it would be hard to plummet

Hi, I think it is not such a big rating drop to be worried about. I agree with some of the posts in that the last years the number of players might have been increasead considerably, and this can have an impact on rating calculations. But you also may look at your play, is it different than how you used to play before? Do you allocate some time to improve your skills? Even the masters need to train and study to keep their strengh through the years. On the other hand, I firmly belive that you can improve at any age provided you dedicate a little time in training.

Good luck!

Aren't bots the computer players one sees when you want to play the computer?

And, if so, how do they contaminate my rating when I play real people?

Got to be honest, I lost about 100 points recently, still enjoying my chess and I feel like the pressure is off, I was considering only playing unrated games, but nah lol.
