You go to 'live chess' and 'view players'. Average rating for blitz is 1123, bullet 1136, standard 1162.
No problem. I wonder if you can read anything into your own strengths and weakness by matching your ratings with the average? For example my current ratings are bullet 1085, blitz 1339, standard 1454, online 1645. I have played a fair sample of each. This clearly shows the more time I have to think the higher my rating. You would have thought that this was common sense and would apply to everyone but it is not the case, there are those with superior bullet or blitz ratings over standard and online.
Sorry, but there is no one size fits all "average" chessplayer
Average rating for what? OTB or CC players? Men, women, jrs or all players? And where? Here? USCF, ICCF, FIDE, or someplace else? You can get detailed info on your own live and online chess stats by clicking on Play - Live Chess per benedictine or Play - Online chess.

How do you find out what the average FIDE rating is?
Beats me. I haven't been able to find it here: www.FIDE.com

Yes I think it does. There's probably a large body of beginner players.

It might be a good thing as it seems there are lots of new people introduced to chess. (:

I think there are mainly 2 reasons why the average is less than 1200:
1. Players often lose most of their first few games, and since these games are weighted very heavily, the amount of rating points that the losing side loses is greater than the amount that the winner gains.
2. A significant number of high-rated players have been banned.
Also, there are a lot of accounts with very low ratings (<1000) that are inactive, probably because the owners have given up on chess. These accounts definitely have an effect on dragging the average ratings down.
More interesting would be to know the Median. Is there any possibility that the chess.com crew would provide also the median value at the page showing the rating curve of players? (http://www.chess.com/livechess/players)

if you were really really interested, you could calculate it yourself withinn some degree of accuracy, but its prolly within 50 points of the average.
