Bad etiquette

If anyone can help, Id appreciate it.

Im new to this site. I enjoy games where time is not a factor thus have games with lots of time on the clock. I have often found myself in the situation where opponents have decided not to continue playing (usually, but not always, when things are not going well for them) or taken way too much time to take their move (maybe they are playing other games or decided to do the spring cleaning mid game). I understand some people like to take their time and assess the situation or need to make a pit stop etc, but im talking WAY TOO MUCH time. A few polite messages asking if they are still there etc. have met with no response. They have not resigned and the connection was not coming up as interupted. Im guessing they decided to let the clock run out possibly to minimise their loss of points. This puts me in the position of either waiting for their time to run out (very boring) or resign which affects my points. Is there any way around this beside just blocking them for the future???? It seems that some people just do not have any manners or integrity... Or are not man or woman enough to take the loss!

Stangr hello!!  Players can take all of their time for every move.  As long as they do not go overtime [in which case the game is lost if the flag drops].  So there is nothing wrong with someone taking 2 days and 59 min to move in a 3 day/move game.

If you want faster chess then go to the live chess or enter games with a faster time limit.

It is not a question of manners or integrity it is correspondence turn based chess.

I move fast in most of my games but if someone tries to rush me to move by sending messages or making comments to that effect I will purposely slow down because the time is mine to use.

I have not been here too long but in my games most people move well within their alloted time an if they do not I do not feel I have anything to say about it.  It is their time to use!!

Why not enter more games or play at a faster time limit?

Thanks for your time and comments.

Im still not sure about all aspects of this site so you may have to excuse any ignorance on my part- the flag dropping as you mentioned for eg, I think I know what you mean about games that can take several days etc. But I think this is different to what you mean - It is live chess I am playing and the game times are in the order of 30-60 mins and after say 10 mins there is no response till their time runs out.

Stangr,

there is no help for that in any one game.

The 'cure' for anyone to whom another player does that is easy, right click on their names and block them - add them to 'blocked' list.  you will neither see anything they say, nor allow them to challenge you again by taking that simple action.

Annoying people can be found anywhere, including here. If somebody is rude to you or lack basic decency, block him. There are thousands of great players around so you'll never run out of opponents. Cheers!

Well in live chess if you run into people that have a lost game and they refuse to move and leave you hanging till the time runs out I ca see where that can get on my nerves.

The only suggestion I have is to put those people on your "no play" list and do not play them again.

I thought you were talking about the correspondence side of the house.  Yes, that would qualify as bad form in my opinion but I do not think there is much you can do about it.

I once played a person in an OTB game with a time of 90 min for 40 moves and after that it was 1 hour sudden death.

He blew the opening, got up and left.  I had to wait a full 90 min. before time was called.  There was absolutely nothing I could do about it but sit there and wait for the clock to run down.  He came back for the next round and no matter how I felt I could not say anything without causing a commotion and possibly me getting tossed out of the tournament.

You run into these people rverywhere but I am happy to say that they are in the minority.

Thanks RetGuvvie98 for the heads up on that situation. Ill do the block thing. Hopefully I wont get caught up in too many more games like that in the future - I just wanna play chess!

Stangr

Cheers peoples!

Maybe a 'spontanously combust the opponent' button will do the trick!

See you on the chess board...

Do your best to accept games with a minimum of the time you want to play.

There are actually weirdos who do that on purpose...set up long live games so that if they start to lose, they will leave you at it...and hope that you'll resign so you can go play another game.

It's funny and infuriating at the same time.

rubygabbi

Is it permissible for a player to abort a game once the game is under way? IMHO there should be an automatic loss for doing so.

Kernicterus

I don't think you can abort once you've each made your first move.  But I noticed just yesterday...a game where my opponent and I both made one move...and he timed out...there was no change in ratings.

ninevah

You can abort it during the first move and it's sometimes necessary - like the player who accepts your challenge but doesn't do his first move for 2 minutes.

Another thing that such dubious characters will try is to let it run till it's almost out, then come back on and play a move, hoping that you've abandoned it and now your flag will fall!  Unfortunately this sort of thing is as old as Ruy Lopez telling you to sit your opponent so he's facing the sun.  It seems to be something of a rule of thumb:  if you play chess, you will encounter jerks.

I did face the same problem on another site, where we can play two games at a time. He was lost with still 11 mins remaining, and i had to wait for another 10 mins before he came and made the move. after i replied instantly, he left for the time to run out.

Such players should be blacklisted.

Here is another etiquette suggestion:  If you win, you can type "gg", "good day", or something pleasant... or even say nothing.  DO NOT challenge your vanquished opponent, especially one badly beaten!  That is like pouring salt in the wound.   Let them initiate the challenge for a rematch if they wish, and if you have time, accept.

totally disagree.

I like it when someone wins and sends me a rematch.

CoachConradAllison

For live chess I advise playing 1+30 instead of 15 minute games - then you will not have to wait so long.

hsbgowd

Agree with Afaf.in fact you should be happy to get a chance to make it even.

Undecided  they need an emoticon that rolls its eyes.

Strangr, don't worry, there are more good people here than bad (but you will encounter bad ones almost everyday unfortunately). I usually play 15 minute games so if an opponent purposely runs down the clock or just leaves, my advice is keep a book by you, or a sandwich, check out the forum here for while, jump back to Live Chess to see if they came back or not. It's only 5-15 minutes you have to wait till you can play another game so it isn't that bad. I personally play for fun, so all my games are unrated & therefore my opponents are people who play chess with me for just the fun of the immediate game and are not ratings obsessed. Unfortunately if you do play rated games, you will get people who cheat, try to taunt you while playing, run down the clocks hoping you will quit the game, all because they want their precious ratings points. Just block them after the game so you will never play them again. This is a great site. Don't let the few idiots spoil it for you.

But BELITTLE and HECKLE me when I'm losing and you will wait for that clock to run out ......... absolutely no room for that in the game of chess!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Good idea. You gotta remove a thorn with a thorn.
