Can you LOSE rating points with a win?

This would seem very strange to me if so.

I am up for playing anyone of any rating just for the fun of it, but would think twice if I was to be PENALIZED for simply playing a lower rated player.

Now LOSING to a lower rated player I could see losing a massive bunch of points, but not winning....thats just dumb.

My rating seemed to drop nearly 100 points after beating a lower rated player!  A bit odd, no?  The game before I gained nearly 100 points from beating a much higher rated player.

Its frustrating to beat someone 1800 and then play someone whos 1000 because thats what they're here for, to play, and then get everything I gained from beating the higher player taken away for a WIN....lol.

Am I missing something?

Are you sure you lost points on that win and not in any other game ?

Tell you what, challenge a lower rated player, and, on the beggining of the game check to see how it will change your rating if you win \ lose

If you see that you will lose points if you win, simply abort the game before making your first move

On ICC you can lose points when you win, but on chess.com that shouldn't happen.

Now there's an idea for an new feature: Before you challenge someone, or accept their challenge, you could check to see how playing them could affect your rating. You could also use such a feature to decide what range of players you'd be agreeable to play against. Useful, no?

Thank you all for your time.

To be honest....Im really NOT sure that I didn't lose the points from some other game.  I guess I have to learn to read the layout a bit better, im still new here.

On a side note: Knowing how a match will affect your rating BEFORE you play is an interesting idea.

Thanks again!

Well, shut my mouth! Chess.com already is pretty much giving us that feature. Before you accept a challenge, at least, you can find the win-draw-loss consequences in the Game Details section, about 3 mm away from the Accept button. (How did I miss that?)

And by viewing a few Open Seek games, you can get an idea, at least, as to how playing players in a certain rating range would affect your rating in what way. That way you won't have to abort a game.

And maybe there's an even easier way that I haven't found yet.

Are we talking about Live Chess or Turn-based Chess?

I was talking abut turn-based. I haven't thought it through re live chess.

There is no sense in losing points even losing a 400 guy.

I am around 1300 rating now and in a turn based game against Simone with 1170 rating I lost 3 points for winning the game... Pretty uncalled for as the system jn fact matched me the game with him

Kinda bummed off to be honest

jamesdowler04

No you don't lose points when you win.

You went from 1257 to 1263 after your last game. Your rating went up.

Make sure to not get confused by the fact that there are several different ratings e.g. for live chess (bullet, blitz, ...). For example, when you have looked at your bullet rating and then you play a bullet game, then you will need to look at your bullet rating after that game (not your blitz rating) to see how your bullet rating has changed after that game.

Which game was that? I'm pretty sure that didn't happen.

I just lost 14 points from winning. Was on 1303 and now im on 1289. Came up saying -14 points when i won too. Its not the first time its happened either. Anyone help?

Caesar49bc

Losing points for winning against a lower rated player makes sense. It prevents people from crawling their ratings up ad nausum by only playing weaker players.

There should be a range where that doesn't happen. But reading these posts, I suspect it's based on some other criteria.

On Lichess, ocacasionaly, a higher rated player will abort me like that, so it's looks to be a standard feature on chess servers.

Which time control?

For daily games you haven’t been above 1300 since late last year.

Which game are you referring to?

It is strange as when i swipe through my gsmes it doesn't show i was on 1303 but i promise you i was. Even currently when i go to setup up a game and select the level of my opponent, eg -50 +50 it says 1303 there. I'm talking in like the last couple of games. I noticed in my last game i won its said -10 but i went up by 4. Bizarre.

manekapa

That is odd. You were rated 1303 for daily chess in 2018.

Is your phone Android? You could try clearing the app’s data cache. Or delete and reinstall the app.

mikebad077

Yeah it is android. Il try that out cheers
