Can't remember where my piece was

Embarrassed to say that often times when I am contemplating a move, I move the piece to a tempting square without releasing the mouse button to see if I'll like the move. However, if I don't like the move and want to return the piece to where it came from, I sometimes forget where that was and can inadvertently make a move after releasing the mouse button. Is there anyway to adjust my settings to hilite where the piece originated?  (I get around it by moving the piece to an obvious square it can't be moved to and chess.com returns it to the original square automatically.) Be nice - I am old and forgetful.

Just pull the piece off of the board and unclick your mouse. It will go back to its original position. Or you can hover it over your opponent's king and drop it because that would be an illegal move.

Thanks. Those approaches make sense.Still seems like there should be a way to hilite the original square even if my mind won't.

I agree, there should be, but is it not simple enough to just do the procedure I posted before?

Yes, in the end, that is the simplest remedy. Thank you.
