Chess.com rating vs. ELO or FIDE

The thing with online chess and OTB board chess is that there are A LOT of factors. I used to wonder the same thing... what is my true rating? My OTB the board rating is only based on 20 rated games so I don't know what it is but my chess.com standard is close to it but my standard goes up or down a lot. So in the end, i concluded this. playing in the comfort of your home, your brain is switched differently. In a serious tournament, your brain is different than at home. Possibly you play better at home or at tourney. The idea is that you shouldn't compate those two. Get better at chess. That is my goal.

My ACF rating = 1480. Chess.com Online = 1833. So c.c online -350 = elo. Remember that there is a margin of error (+-100) and ratings do fluctuate.

For the most, and in my case, i'd think that for a general ammount of the population it is actually otherwise. Chess.com ratings are much lower than OTB rating, at least for me.

I guess it depends on the ammount of effort you're putting into the games, and if you think you're putting the same ammount of effort as you would in OTB games, then the rates could be closer to reality or even a bit above if you really dedicate yourself to it.

As for me, considering that here i lose a huge ammount of games on time, silly blunders out of distraction, misclicks or even disconnects, and just because i use online chess to try all the crazy things i can think of, no wonder my chess.com rating is around 400 points lower than my real fide rating, even in standard.

On OTB it's completelly different, i'll obviously play things i know deeper, risk less, and not having disconnects every now and then, and that's just enough to be able to put me way above my ratings while training here.

So i guess, it's up to each case, and how much you actually care about the rating here rather than OTB.

I treat this as a bit of fun.  In fact I have had 100's of accounts on chess.com, as I typically join for a few days (sometimes less).  However, I do try and get my rating as high as possible before I get bored.   Typically I play 1min, 2 & 1 and 3min games.

I actually find the initial rating an annoying limitation.  I am not a titled player OTB, so I have to join at 1200 ELO, which for me is a joke.   Within an hour of playing either bullet or blitz, I get to around 2000 ELO, but generally not before someone accuses me of cheating?...I mean dah...how the heck am I meant to cheat at speed chess and even when I tell them my OTB rating is typically around the 2200 ELO mark, they still get pissed!

My speed rating on chess.com though is actually below what my OTB rating is, perhaps because at 5 min blitz, those 2 minutes make a big difference and the fact that being eye to eye with an opponent does offer other influencing factors.

For me, online blitz is still a challenge when I start to play decent blitz players and I cannot for the life of me move the damn mouse as quickly, because it really is about this ability too, so please don't measure your speed rating in any seriousness if you have poor internet connection and you suck at mouse handling.

I dont know why you guys (not everybody) keep forgeting that chess.com base rating is 1200 and FIDE 1800. So theres no such thing as 1200 here 1200 there, unless you played a lot of games and lost them all, and I dont know if anyone who would do that, I know I wouldnt.

Just when I find someone (blitzkinghammy) with something interesting to say and click on him to find out more I find his dratted account has been closed!  Cheers, David.

KingOfBlunder84

that's also a factor that contribute to deflated rankings on chess.com: people who create 100s of accounts like blitzkinghammy, who start at 1200 again and again, when in reality they are actually stronger.

dirtybishope4

I think the rating also might be affected by the way you play. As in some people might play better on an actual board rather than on a screen vise versa. I believe I play alot better on a board rather than when I play on my phone

My rating is really weird I've been playing for 6 months and I have no clue what it is my chess.com rating is 1390 and my CXR rating is 1100 and my lichess is 1600 and my elo is 1890 should I just average them out

jyweetniewiekben

Idk, for me personal the rating seems quite fair. But it depends also on the country u are originating from (when not comparing with fide). For example my dutch rating is about 1700 - similar to what I got on Chess.com but when playing against Belgians it's a lot more difficult to reach 1700. Every chess rating "market" has it's own share of certain rating level players and I guess it is kind of bs to compare, as you will never play against a fair share of the full world..

apalladi

my rating is around 1800 on chess.com and my FIDE rating is about 2000. Therefore I think that the chess.com ELO is an underestimation of the real strength of the player. Moreover I read that some GM have 2300 here and it confirms this 200 of difference between chess.com and the Fide rating, I think

ben595

Rating is not your value. Since it fluctuates from game to game, it is a measure of your strength relative to others. Correct me if I wrong, but chess.com rating after 1000 games is a better relative measure than an elo obtained after 10 games.

Skand

I have a feeling rating algorithm has been made tighter over last 6-7 years. My rating remained above 1800 for a long time around 2011 but now I struggle to even remain around 1700 consistently. My percentile is 96.2 at present (rating 1667) and I think it was very similar even when I was around 1800. Does anyone else feel the same? Is there a graph that shows chess.com's average rating over last few years? I think average rating must have come down about 100 points in last 6-7 years.

wwwsparker

why is the rating during a live game lower than my current ratimg? on my stats page the rating is correct.

Gladyak

I'm a 1790 rated Rapid player on chess.com at the moment. What would my FIDE rating be?

Aaravm

fide rating=chess.com rating - 200or300

if you play in India

Deranged

I'm 1700 blitz and 1800 bullet on chess.com. Do you think my real FIDE rating would be around 1600?

michaeltakhell

Aaravm but this is not the case with you given the fact that your fide rating is 1366 and your chess.com rating is also somewhere there.
