Disconnections and Gameplay

Hello, chess.com community!

I have a severe connection problem. I read about disconnections - and I see that games were made to not end when disconnections occur. However, this is causing gameplay A LOT of problems. I just played a 15 - 10 game, and lost 10 minutes off my clock by disconnections alone. This basically gave my opponent a large advantage - and well into the game, I ran out of time. It was a good game, but impossible to play.

My suggestion is to simply cancel any ratings associated with games that involve several disconnections, but keep the game on record as with any other rated game. This would eliminate a lot of frustration for people who lose a majority of their time in the game (time that should be used looking at the board - not at "Reconnecting...").

If anybody has ideas regarding this, please tell here. Thanks a lot!

Does anybody have any suggestions? I like this website - but if I'm unable to play games in Live Chess, I will have to switch websites.

I'm having the same problems. Constantly disconnected yesterday, just lost another game due to me abandoning the game. The really annoying thing is you don't know if you've abandoned, I just sat for 10 minutes waiting for my opponent to move only to discover I'd lost. It makes me paranoid, every time it's my opponents turn and they take more than 3 minutes I think that I've probably abandoned.

I'm not bothered about the ratings and the suggestion you made is about ratings. I just find it frustrating to invest 30 minutes into a game and then have it snatched away from me.

I also don't know if I'm doing anything to cause the games to abandon. If I hit refresh does that lose the game?

I have recently found out that the Internet connection in my entire building is weaker than normal - probably a temporary situation. I also switched to Firefox and am doing fine for the moment. Maybe, Maradonna - switch to Firefox if you're not using it. If you're using it, try clearing cache and cookies. If you have done that, try deleting unnecessary add-ons and close other running applications. If you can't find a resolution in those - maybe try to use a wireless connection (although I doubt that will improve conditions). Good luck!

Thanks for the tips. Yeah, the problem I have is that it's not my computer so I can't be changing things to make it more chess.com compatible. Pity. Like I say, I'd just like to know when the connection has gone so I don't sit there like a goon staring at a game that is alrady dead :)

Maybe there is a way to do this - I just don't know it .
