gg is arrogance

you're just happy to get noticed.

I say gg after losing...which in my short career here, I have done 8 times out of 9 so far in live chess...I think it's nice to be gracious. Most people leave after winning fairly quickly...what I want to say actually is 'A brilliant coup sir.'

But all I have time to get in is 'gg'

sillysocks

Technically 'gg,' no matter what, is a gracious reply, win or lose. Reading more into it is a consequence of the emotional state of the player (loser) I think. Sure, it can be grating, but that's the game. As a very weak player myself, I understand how it can be jarring. But that's chess, I think. Best to suck it up, be gracious back, go over your game, and use it as a learning opportunity.

How can a jarring response, be gracious?  To say that it is "Technically" so, is to put form over substance.

"Jarring response"...grrrrrrrrrr...now that's the spirit.

And to flagboy:

"you're just happy to get noticed."

Hell, no. Surely you comprehend the value of incognito personification. I remember when you looked more like a flag than an old bag...although the latter does seem to better suit your inherent id. Surprised

i can only be who i am, but i seem to have upset you. all press is good press eh lad. here's a clue for you: when in doubt, take things very seriously. i know i do.

On another site, it was possible to set up an automatic comment that always appeared at the end of the game. Many opted to set up "gg", others were more creative. For a while, I used, "Mistakes were made, but it was fun. Thanks for the battle."

50 pages of discussion thread on the moral implications so of "gg".  This is why nobody takes chessplayers seriously.....

But there do seem to be a number of people, who still take good manners seriously.

To be honest, not all fifty pages are on point. Even so, there's a considerable number that address this faux issue.

GG is arrogant???  STUPID THREAD.  Please lock it and burn it.  GG is the same as shaking your opponents hand at the start of an otb chess game except it is done at the end.  There is no arrogance involved when a person says GG.  Anyone who thinks it is arrogant get over yourself.

There are two things to say to the one named after the failed presidential canidate of 1864:why would one be contempuous of anyone for being able to expand on a topic? The question is philosophic. Going 50 pages on a philosophic topic,is quite understandable. There are those, content managers and editors who wet their pants, they are so afraid of philosophy. Then with the courage typical of their class, they make philosophy illegal. Can't talk politics. Can't talk about God,Soul, and Spirit. Somehow these honorable men are forced to act dishonorably.Chess is too great a game to be circumscribed . But the managers know that hard sayings make people cry. Chess moves are painful enough.

You haven't upset me in the least, silly boy. Smile

No...all press is not good. Where do you come up with such a universal oxymoronic axiom? Show me the text.

Now...gg...that's the crux of the matter. gg bashing...reminds me of the Jeremy Silman bashings (I, for one, really like his books) and all the other iconoclasms hereabouts.

There are those (not me) who hold these matters in angst...on a scale of 1 to 10 as a 10. They have nothing better to do. They are losers. Losers can't accept losing so they pillory those things that we chess players sanctify...such as the congenial "gg".

They are the "occupy Wallstreeters" of the chess world. But, their lousy chess play is their subterfuge.

Shame...shame on them...that's what I have to say.

Now, I must go and make this a better world.

And, wheter or not I am taking all this crap seriously is not for you to judge. I'll be the judge of me, thank you very much. What do you think I am...a yeres30? Hah!

And far too many who take themselves too seriously.

I'm a little excited because I'm playing in my first online tournament,a double round-robin in five player sections.

There's a whole new protocol for online chess. I'm going to lay it all out before the game begins or on one of the early moves: My greetings and location, best wishes and compliments and nothing afterwards but analysis.

Saying "gg" when you win is impolite. It is a phrase meant to compliment the opponent, not show off one's victory.

To me personally all abbreviations in stead of using proper phrases or dialogue are impolite whether they are meant well or not, say what you've got to say otherwise do not bother at all, is my opinion. I sometimes say to my opponent "gg" when I win but then it was a really good game and not just a shitty win. It will then be a complete sentence how I appreciated this particular game and straight offer a rematch. IMHO that is okay, if not, well I can't please everybody, sorry.
