To me personally all abbreviations in stead of using proper phrases or dialogue are impolite whether they are meant well or not, say what you've got to say otherwise do not bother at all, is my opinion. I sometimes say to my opponent "gg" when I win but then it was a really good game and not just a shitty win. It will then be a complete sentence how I appreciated this particular game and straight offer a rematch. IMHO that is okay, if not, well I can't please everybody, sorry.

Jaerun

Perhaps the OP would prefer the rather more distinguished taunt "qq"

Write better, Sir.  And try not to contradict yourself.

All this sensitivity is just ridiculous. Why don't people just concentrate on playing chess and ignore all these online salutes. Forget about saying 'hi', 'gg', etc Just play!! Personally, I ignore all messages from my opponents....yes, cause thats what you are when you play against me, my opponent. So I don't want to say, talk, or communicate anything with you except for my anger all over the board. Keep your friendiness and interest in socializing somewhere else....just play darn it!!!

i can only be who i am, but i seem to have upset you. all press is good press eh lad. here's a clue for you: when in doubt, take things very seriously. i know i do.

You haven't upset me in the least, silly boy.

No...all press is not good. Where do you come up with such a universal oxymoronic axiom? Show me the text.

Now...gg...that's the crux of the matter. gg bashing...reminds me of the Jeremy Silman bashings (I, for one, really like his books) and all the other iconoclasms hereabouts.

There are those (not me) who hold these matters in angst...on a scale of 1 to 10 as a 10. They have nothing better to do. They are losers. Losers can't accept losing so they pillory those things that we chess players sanctify...such as the congenial "gg".

They are the "occupy Wallstreeters" of the chess world. But, their lousy chess play is their subterfuge.

Shame...shame on them...that's what I have to say.

Now, I must go and make this a better world.

And, wheter or not I am taking all this crap seriously is not for you to judge. I'll be the judge of me, thank you very much. What do you think I am...a yeres30? Hah!

this post is really, really beautiful  i thank you.  you're a master of words.  my work is done.

offense.  this is the lamest shit i've ever heard.  let me get this straight...  you just say the same thing at the end of every game?  that's so cutting edge.  and i bet you mean it EVERY TIME you say it.

yep, except that I changed the auto message every few months and never used gg or thx, which were by far the most common.

this is ecxactly what i'm talking about.  why say something if you don't mean it?

this is rhetorical.  i actually know why people do this and it still sucks.

So not only did you use a completely meaningless phrase (since it was universal, not tailored to the game), you couldn't even be bothered to type it in yourself?  And you've been holding yourself up as a paradigm on this issue?  HAW!

TheGrobe

They're empty platitudes.  Reading anything into them is a waste of time.

Ziryab

I wouldn't play chess if I did not enjoy it, and I have never played an error free blitz game. Of course, my experience is limited for I've played only a few more than 60,000 games in the past 15 years of online play.

There are innumerable things that I could say and always mean after a chess game, including "Mistakes were made, but it was fun. Thanks for the battle." I cannot always mean "good game."

Yes, as in: http://www.theenglishteacheronline.com/say-what-you-mean-mean-what-you-say/

TheGrobe

If you say it every time regardless of the context, especially if you just pre-program it, then it's devoid of meaning regardless of how you might otherwise rationalize it.

ilikeflags

your pre-programmed response means nothing.  it means absolutely nothing.  but i expect you to say it anyway.  my reasoning for not appreciating or buying into these inane pre-programmed responses seems to come from a different level than from where many chess.commies are coming from.  i'm ok with that.  i don't think i'm better.

e4nf3

Wow! The indignity of it all.

I'm going to start saying: "Would you like a grapefruit?"

Or, for brevity: WYLAG?

I like that approach!  But how will you deliver the goods if someone responds with "Y" ? Cool

TheGrobe

Well, in the spirit of "saying what you mean", it's really only an inquiry; not a promise.
