 very good point.

Normally I say, "Good game, thanks for playing"

Heh, I wouldn't say sorry, just quietly slip away.  "Thanks for the game" is what I use when someone says something to me first, but I stay silent if my opponent does.  We all play soooo many games on here, it's usually pointless to say anything.

TheGrobe

If it actually was a good game, I'll say "good game" -- I don't want to just throw it around as a shallow formality to the point that it loses its actual meaning.  Otherwise, I usually say "thanks for the game", or, if I've blundered away what was a good game up until that point (which happens all to often...) I'll apologize for spoiling a good game.

If someone's going to take offence to any of that, I view it as their problem and not mine.

You know, you have to deal with the whole community here.  Please stop acting like you're better than everyone else, and your concerns are more important.  Your constant belittling of people by talking about blocking them is actually much ruder than most posters on here can manage to be.

I rarely type "gg". If I actually think it was a good game and my opponent won I will sometimes type "well played" or something. If I won by good playing and they type "gg" I will write "thanks." If it was a time win / loss, or due to a blunder on either side, there is really no need to say anything, in my opinion.

If I make a huge blunder in the game, I'll immediately resign (no reason to drag it out), and say "whoops, gg".

I say "gg" after every game I play, win or lose, because, even if I destroy the opponent with a quick mate, it was a good game because a) it was a win for me, and b) it teaches that opponent to look out for that next time (meaning it's a "good instructional game" for that player).

Every game of chess is a good game, even one with a huge blunder, in my opinion.

Also, time permitting, I always accept rematches... even if I'm pretty much guaranteed to lose.

if I make a HUGE blunder in my game I normally wait to see what my opponent's next move will be. You never know, (s)he may not see the blunder.

However, if (s)he catches the blunder and is losing on time i may play it out to see if I can win on time.

Sometimes I do resign automatically if there is no way i can recover

just talk it out ya know.. communicate. no need to depend on symbols and 'universally understood' initialisms.

also, 100 comments ftw ^^

What if you don't want to communicate?  What if you just want to play a civil game of chess and be courteous, polite, and brief?

Sloth in a box was TOTALLY AWESOME!

TheYear9876

i suppose the other way of looking  at it is that far from rubbing salt in the wound a winner who types 'gg' is actually  being  'nice' he  may not truly think it  was a gg but  is prepared to pretend in order to make his opponent feel slightly better about his loss. just a mad  theory lolLaughing

Well usually when the conversation is prolonged, miscommunication is less likely. What I mean is a lot of people just say something like gg and leave. In a situation like that you might as well not say anything at all. I mean even with good intention, the losers tend to get more emotional, especially if they made a bad blunder somewhere. Either way unless there is something special you really want to say, I think it's best to not say anything at all after winning.

I'm not saying this is necessarily better but if you were to just have a one comment thing something like "That was a really good game, I think you are a really good player" or "That was an interesting game, I really enjoyed it. Thanks for the game," would be less likely to be misinterpreted. I mean in general, everything can be misinterpreted. Something like "I think you are a good player" can be seen as sarcasm to some. But if you say it along with something it's much less likely.

But I think that a lot of games deserve a conversation or maybe you were interested in your opponent (as for example, maybe he has an interesting playing style or you wanted to play them again). The game that someone just played doesn't necessarily describe your opponent, so saying something like good game can be irritating, especially if your opponent doesn't feel that way (like when they made a blunder or you completely dominated them). I mean in general I think the chat is more useful for maybe some small introductory talk and then if you want a longer after the game discussion. But something as short "good game" doesn't spark conversation (unless it really was a good game). Something like "Thanks for the game, I really liked how you play- do you want to play another game some time later, Where did you learn that opening, where did you learn to play?" Or something like or anything specific you wanted to know about/from your opponent would be better.

"Thanks for playing" seems to be the most polite, and is my personal favorite.  "gg" is definitely a holdout from the old FPS games where you didn't have much time between rounds and needed to say it fast.  Ideally, when someone just types "gg", you just type "gg" back, and don't analyze it too much - they're just in a hurry.

I take the same approach and feel the same way.

It's never a big deal to me one way or the other. Once in a while I play against an insulting player. I just ignore him/her.

BirdsDaWord

I say gg to most people - it doesn't matter about the quality of the game, whether I lost or not, but I enjoyed the time spent playing.  I don't always say it, but if I had fun, I will say it.
