I second IMBacon's advice: Play Slow Chess.

Now, there is sometimes an issue playing slow chess here: some players abandon games. The solution is to join something like Dan Heisman Learning Center club (here at chess.com), where there is a managed opportunity to play slow chess (and where offenders are quickly eliminated from the club).
