LEAVE LIVE ALONE!!

If you aren't going to fix the lag, the cheaters, the displaying of lines, the MASSIVE resource drain your advertising 'partners' foist on users...then at least for the LOVE OD GOD, don't alter the cosmetics!

You have ZERO clue how disconcerting it is to have the board CHANGE COLOUR after a game...not have the REPLAY BUTTON work anymore?

AGAIN. LEAVE THE LAME COSMETICS ALONE!

This may come as a surprise to most you but chess players don't even SEE the board and don't CARE unless you CHANGE something FOR ZERO REASON!  I just want to start a new game. I just want the site to work.  Your garbage IMPROVEMENTS do NOTHING!!!

There's now also an irritating buzz when you try and make an illegal move (which is very common in bullet/blitz) I get the logic behind it but it's quite off putting having this annoying buzz sound while you're trying to play.

Yes.  Did they change the volume of it or something?  The last couple games I played were in a bit of a rage because of the board colour change at the end and the replay button not working -- but yes, that sound is monstrous.

Look - those responsible -- if you're testing this 'stuff' in normal time controls then it may work and function as you think it should; "something slick to wow the plebs".

Where this stuff breaks is with bullet players.  We start a new game every two minutes at the longest, probably closer to every 90 seconds...and to have things jumping around, changing colour, making obnoxious sounds, pointless animations (I'm looking at you whoever thought the seek thing was cool -- it's crap and childish).

And don't say, "But we have "focus mode!"  Focus mode is useless for bullet. Focus mode is just stupid and a bandaid because you saddled the main interface with too much crap.  Remove the CRAP and you DON'T NEED a bleeding useless 'focus mode'.  Because you know what 'focus mode' does?  It highlights what a FAILURE your interface is.

Grow the site the hell up.  We aren't children.  This isn't facebook.  After how many years of shoehorning this abject site redesign that ONLY the OWNER wants are you going to admit its an abominatory failure?

Jeez louis.

Hard for me to top that one, Chungle.  👍

I initially thought it was a problem with my browser -which says a lot about these clumsy new changes. I hope this doesn't stick because it's absolute hot garbage.

Avatar of chungle

AND...you've ruined premove!  That's positively barbaric!  Upthread someone called what you've done, 'hot garbage'.  That's apt.  Now making premoves one can no longer cancel a sequence by right clicking..you're locked into the entire sequence...YOU'VE RUINED BULLET

Holy cow.  There are obviously no chess players on the site team.  You should be ashamed at what you've built.  TOTAL CRAP!!

I have lost many a good  game of bullet with that!

Played a 3|0 Blitz game just now and cancelling premoves with the right click worked fine.

I've never, ever had the board change colour on me, even after a series of bullet games just now. Or had any sounds other than that of the pieces moving, which I find actually helps me in bullet, because it gives me something other than just the visual cue that my opponent has moved. I don't get any buzz if I try to make an illegal move. Are you sure you haven't signed up for the beta or something odd like that?

My lag does seem a little worse than it used to be, which I've found a bit frustrating at times in 1|0 bullet, but hey - it's only bullet.

Hi Caedrel,

I don't know what's going on!  I'm speaking from my East Coast North American time zone and twice yesterday what I stated in my original rant happened:  The board would change colour after a game with replay functionality crippled, a weird sound effect on a misclick, and the premove list unable to be reset on a right click.

It did revert back to how it was working previously at some point later but while it was going on it was terrible.  This was more than normal audio cues and more than how the interface was/is supposed to work.

I don't know if there was some sort of scripting error or what it was.  I do know that I wasn't the only one experiencing this and I also know it wasn't a local issue since it would happen no matter what browser was  in use....but it did revert back to normal.  I didn't notice the premove issue until it happened the second time -- It's so annoying.

I just want stability!  Lag is so terrible on this site and the design is so slow....and whatever lag mitigation they're using....doesn't work.  They refuse to get TIMESEAL which would solve ALL the lag problems and make games fair.  As it is, anyone being bombed by advertising is lost.  They push so much at you if you happen to be a juicy demographic that anyone playing in a third world country wins by miles.

So to reiterate: Whatever happened, happened twice yesterday over two sessions for me (it might have happened more often but I have no insight into that) before reverting back to normal.

Sigh.  I'm so sad everytime I login now.

I used to love this place.  They've ruined it.

Googling Timeseal indicates that it's a separate piece of software that needs to be installed - is that even possible with a browser based interface? Not to mention the fact that it seems to be owned by a competitor, so the reluctance seems understandable to me. 🤷‍♀️

I have no idea what might have caused your interface problems, but it certainly sounds pretty serious and annoying - sounds like Chess.com has figured it out, though - hopefully they stay fixed for you!
Avatar of chungle

Caedrel, a 'timeseal-like' identifier for the packet that includes your move must be within the capabilities of most professional programmers - I seem to think that it would alter the experience...as time would be added and subtracted constantly from ones clock.  But I fear it cannot be instituted on this site since the game is secondary to the advertising.  Once advertising must be accommodated then (as I type this a string from an advert URL mocks me from the bottom of the browser) then nothing will be able to mitigate the unfairness occurring because the advertising flow is asymmetrical - both players never receive the same adverts at the same time....since internet advertising prides itself on targeting...that is almost impossible now.  So, bullet live is going to be broken from forthwith.

I have no idea either what caused the issues.  I only know it has happened before and will most likely happen again...since the site code is clumsy and unwieldy, they continue to attempt repairs to the unrepairable...the site owners' egos won't allow them to admit error.

Which is a shame since everything that once made the site unique is broken...which now leads to long time members leaving like a slow drip from a broken faucet (Like Rune Tonseth https://www.chess.com/member/RuneTonseth who was an extremely active administrator for his Viking Warriors...the site broke his spirit.  You'll not see the like again.  People like Captain Pike...Stormbringer... )

Once the final functionality of version two is gone...I will allow my account to go dormant.

There are other sites.  Other sites that have incorporated suggestions that I and others have made -- specifically regarding correspondence type time controls.

Once some of these sites institute competitive guilds or teams, there will nothing to hold anyone here anymore.  Chess.com will devolve into a news and daily puzzle portal...and that will be that.

I think you're close to the mark, Chungle.

The site has nearly completely abandoned the 'community' that built this site up with v2.  Of the previously active players I used to interact with, I'd say we're well below half of what/who used to participate on this site daily.

And, as for my millenial son who wanted (and got) a paid membership here -- he's gone on to other games & sites.

Avatar of Spacebux

This December, it will be 5.. yes FIVE YEARS since the inception of version 3 of chess.com came in to existence.

Five years on and we are still waiting for it to be on par with what v2 was.
