New Logic for Auto-pairing and Seek Graph!

Here's a new Support article that's related...

@bertmanxxx - the new logic should continue trying to match you as long as your seek range includes a Min of at least -25 (relative to your current rating), and the Max is at least +25.

Basically the new default pairing logic looks for close matches around your rating - literally in a circle that widens as time passes. You can take (somewhat reduced) advantage of the quickness of that system, even if you put caps on your opponents' rating, provided you allow that minimum span of +/- 25.

Not cool guys. The site was working just fine before. I've been playing on here everyday for the past 3-4 years.

Now I find myself waiting on average 5-10 mins before I find an opponent. How is this an improvement?? If you don't want people to use custom settings just remove them altogether. You gonna lose people over this.

I suggest you review your 'logic' ASAP.

I'm with Superbeanz. It wasn't broke, didn't need fixing

On top of that, I'm missing those blue dots from old "friends" that aren't appearing

We are now matching people with similar ratings much faster than ever before. If your rating is 1500 and you are searching for 1700+ opponents, you would need to be lucky, because 1700 players are matched quickly with 1700 players and 1500 players are matched with 1500 players. If you accept opponents close to your rating (+-25), you'll get a good opponent for you in seconds. You can still do -25/+200 and from time to time you may get a game with someone stronger.

Hope it helps!

This update is regressive. In order to play a game against higher rated players... I have to wait forever. Seriously, the whole reason I play on chess.com is becoming obsolete.

This update needs to be reverted.

Hello,

That's only because our system is matching players much better now and higher rated players play with opponents with similar rating instead of playing with lower rated ones. To play with higher rated players you need to reach higher rating or challenge them directly for a game. Also, if a higher rated player is searching down, you may have a chance to accept their seek or get auto-matched with them. Most people search for players with similar rating though to get a challenging game.

Piotr

I'm sorry but whaat? I thought my internet connection sucked - now I discover that I am basically forced to play only patzers like me instead of being able to play a higher rated opponent and actually learn something - well yes, I can wait 40 minutes to play a 5-minutes blitz.

Hmmm, a dubious move

YANQUI_UXO

Piotr, how's that much better for lower rated players? "You are lower rated, stay there in your bunch!" ... mah!

How is this better????? How am i ever going to improve if i dont play people that are better than me??? If i am only playing people that are the same standard as me i will most likely stay that standard for longer. I completely agree with YANQUI_UXO. How am I going to improve??? I am a low rated player and this is not good for me either. If i didnt want to play players rated higher than me before i didnt have to but now all they have done is take away that option. An option which i frequently chose because it is the best way to learn. This is a wrong move by this site and im not happy about it. Why did the site have to change it? The best possible system was in place and they changed it for what probably is the worst. This system needs to be changed back or people will start to leave this site.

To get some games against higher rated opponents, join one of the OPEN section tournaments. I realize that basic members only get 3 opportunities per week for this, but it is at least one other way (other than those piotr mentioned) to get some games versus higher rated players.

YANQUI_UXO

Ok, but I feel a little discriminated (all lower rated players). Well, I guess that's just that, accept it or die :)

Whatever, it's just a way to make people pay.

this is cool

I am a player that has my minimum rating 1475 and am floating around the lower 1400's. i enjoy playing harder opponents over lower ones. also it was always a treat to play that random 1700 and lose but still learn much from it. now it is impossible to get someone over 25 points higher than me. were people really complaining prior to the change? you guys should focus on more important things, like trying to improve the html setup, make the board resizable without having to increase the tool bar at the top and the chat. chesscube.com has a great interface but lower popularity. matchmaking logic should be a lower priority.

novocainer

You have one less low ranked player.

are u sure that the stronger players who forgot to set seek limits enjoy playing weaker players? By and large this is good change. At least getting an opponent with standard times is very fast now.

If uwant to play against better players get better :)

How is someone meant to get better when they cannot play people better than themselfes to learn from them??? Why would you forget to set seek limits?? That is the one thing you have to do before a game. If you cant remember to do that your playing the wrong game. Besides if you did forget to set the seek limits you could also abort. Your not going to make that mistake more than once.

Congratulations, chess.com.  In the process of fixing something that wasn't broken, you've managed to make it take longer to get a game for many people when there are 15,000 plus players online.

Amazing.

YANQUI_UXO

Since I see no fuzz about this, no posts apart from me and 3-4 others, I guess nobody cares at all...just..beautiful!

How can I get a good rating if now I have to play a crazy amount of games to go up 100 points??? Before, I could beat 6 or 7 higher rated players and get my rating higher in 1 day or 2... I mean ok... no problem, really :S

TheMoonwalker

It's just not a good idea to make it difficult to get higher rated opponents.

05jogrady

My next question is, Why are there not hundreds of people complaining about this??? Do they care or is it just us few and we are going to have to put up with this??? Why would this site do this??? And what can we do about it?????? Why couldnt they just leave it as it was??? The old system was so much better.

marvingardens

To the people who are complaining about longer waits for "up-seeking" (excluding players of your rating or lower), does it bother you at all that people like you would never accept seeks from people like you? Or that if everyone adopted your brilliant improvement strategy, the number of live chess games played per day would be zero?

What's more, your understanding of how chess ratings actually work as meaningful indicators of strength seems flawed. Do you really think getting creamed by someone 500 points better is the best way to learn? Do you dream there are official rated events offering 1200s exposure to 1700s?

By refusing to play people around your rating, you ask higher-rated players to put their rating on the line in a way you're not willing to, because you're too cowardly to stake your rating/skills against lower-rated opponents. Well, too bad: That's how honest/accurate ratings happen.

Anyway, if playing higher-rated players is the fast-track to higher ratings, why aren't you all 2000+ already anyway? Are you saying this change happened before you had a chance to reach your true level?

The changes to pairing in Live Chess are fantastic, because they reduce exposure to poor sports and rage quitters, and quickly offer good games with people at/near one's level: As I improve, so will my opposition. Perfect.

These changes are just exposing some of you to the truth you don't want to hear: Most people don't want to play on your terms. If they did, they'd be jumping all over the seek graph for the chance to beat you and earn their 2 rating points. :P
