Who is taking screen shots of your PC?
Report a BUG screenshot is ILLEGAL

If you report a software bug to chess.com and submit the message, it will come up with a box that says, "Taking Screen Shot", there is a bit of a delay while you stare at a timer box, and then it thanks you for submitting the report. This is so illegal and outrageous, I'm still in a bit of shock.

Never seen or heard of that when i have submitted screen shots.

Um no. You have the option to cancel the send bug report before it takes a screenshot. You can then submit a ticket as usual.
You consciously hit the "Report a Bug" option and you consciously click the "Send" button.
So no one is doing anything illegal.
As the movie said, "Calm down, Francis."

Yes, as near as I can tell, it doesn't even get the entire browser window, only the part displaying chess.com - thus excluding things like other open tabs.

Thanks for your worry the_chess_zebra! In a world where companies collect and sell data, you have every right to worry about your personal information. Chess.com, of course, is not in that business, and In this case, I've got good news for you! Not only do you have the ability to cancel sending the screenshot, as said above, but the only thing captured in the shot is our own site--and whatever arrows or text YOU want to add on the edit screen. If you still have questions, or worries about the legality please feel free to reach out to us at support@chess.com and ask for Shaun. I'll be happy to have a dialogue with you there!

"with a box that says, "Taking Screen Shot", there is a bit of a delay while you stare at a timer box, and then it thanks you for submitting the report". Just how long DO you stare at the timer box?? I take a screenshot of Chess.com EVERYDAY at 4pm, and I keep telling Erik, "The mods are sleeping on the job, LOOK".

I beg to differ with ALL of you. There is no "opt out" available after you click the command button to submit the bug report. It may be fine if only the chess.com window is snapped, but that is NOT what the message says. It says "taking screen shot" or similar. It should say, "copying chess.com window." I've been writing software since before most of you were born, I have headed up some very important teams, who laid the groundwork for the computer systems in use today. I don't appreciate the off-topic replies. I suggest that chess.com make the comment more explicit. Thank you for answering my post.

I doubt you have been writing software since before I was born, or even before I started using computers, and I usually find that people who find the need to state stuff like that are full of it.
This has been reported to your support team. You can NOT take a screenshot of someone's PC without asking their permission first. People can have multiple windows open and no one has the right to take a screen shot without expressed permission. What you are doing is an invasion of privacy and a violation of the law. You are not entitled to snap a screen without warning the user that pressing "submit" will initiate a screen shot AND confirming that it is OKAY ("yes"/"no") to take the screen shot after the user presses "submit". The day is coming when someone has personal, company-confidential, or non-public government documents open and you take a screen shot. If this were my case (fortunately, my work was not on display), I would have no choice but to refer the matter to my attorney, who would commence legal action against chess.com and persue the case against you to the fullest extent under the law. Fortunately this time, I don't have to do this, HOWEVER, you are setting yourself up for a HUGE liability if it happens to someone else. As I said in my report, please fix this problem within 7 days, after which - if it is not fixed - I will be reporting this situation to the FCC. Whoever dreamt up the idea of the screen shot and whoever approved it really needs to read the U.S. Federal Law regarding internet privacy and user rights. Putting some fine print in your TOS does not cover this type of software program because it would NEVER stand up in a court of law. I hope you can fix it right away because I like your site and I would hate to see it shut-down because someone in your IT department wasn't thinking when they installed that screen shot software. And if you think you would not be shut down, please think again. There is nothing better than a landmark case to get the point across and pulling the plug on the internet's most populaar chess site would definitely be a landmark case. Thank you for updating your support report software to comply with user privacy rights.
