This is one of my pet peeves - people who "fake apologize". Two things here, first it's not a real apology if you say "I apologize if ....". Second, never include the word "but" in an apology. It sucks all the meaning out of it, and draws the reader's attention only to what follows. Just simply say "I'm sorry for what I said". That's a real apology.
Don't be absurd. It was not a fake apology. My intent was certainly not to hurt his/her feelings, but to point out the impracticality of the argument. It's not a real apology if using the word "if" huh? Why not? If his feelings weren't hurt then I'm not sorry, because I'm not sorry for the statement I made; rather, whether or not the statement hurt his feelings.
Though I do have to agree that including a "but" in an apology is rather crass.
