Sound Issue

Same problem on firefox

And on Google Chrome...

Rather irritating - at some point the opponent's move just stop being heard. And you say to yourself - too bad, there go my next 30-35 rating points, that I've worked so hard to obtain...

Funny thing is, I recently went up about 100 points DESPITE this problem. Now imagine where my blitz rating would be if actually SOUND was working!

That's the thing - as the NM put it on page 1 - I lose tons of time because I sometimes don't notice that the opponent has move. I wait for his move - then I see that it's MY time that is ticking. Really irritating - one more worry when playing blitz against strong players.

If I was guessing (and I'm a software engineer, so I'm fairly well qualified to guess) then I'd guess that this is caused by an unitialized variable somewhere.  I still get the problem now I've moved to Windows 10 and reinstalled Java.  I was getting it yesterday in a game where I only heard some moves.  Every few moves the sound would switch on/off - seemingly completely at random.  If your engineers have a new program they would like me to beta test I'd be happy to help out.  But this issue clearly isn't fixed.

I hope they hire you!

I hope they hire me too.  [But obviously I would not expect any payment.]  Sadly I've not heard from them about this - so maybe it won't happen...  I'm certainly open to help.

[I am going to keep posting this once a week until someone from from chess.com at least gives some kind of response. The problem has been known for at least half a year now.]

Is anyone working on this? Would really be great if this could be fixed!

This is already fixed in V3! Click on "Try the new Chess.com" at the bottom of your page for our new, upcoming site

Erik:  Sadly this is _not_ fixed in v3.  I tried it today, full of optimism, in my usual Google Chrome browser - and I had exactly the same sound issue (randomly getting sounds on and off during games) while observing Keranke vs Sultan today..  It's a shame .  So you might want to take advantage of my offer to help test new code on this one...

I'm using a chromebook, not that I think that should matter. Just played a blitz game and it was frustrating being unaware of when my opponent moved. The sound is very important. If Chess.com wants to be taken seriously, perhaps they should fix stuff like this instead of wasting everyone's time by offering faulty features and not fixing them. Ever.

I tried the new version - and had exactly the same problem. This is clearly not fixed there either...

Windows Vista desktop here. I only have experienced obvious sound issues with the latest stable Firefox release (version 42) which implements an "audio mute" functionality per tab. No sound would be reproduced on both the old and new chess.com live chess interfaces. In this case, it's probably a compatibility issue caused by the browser's audio mute implementation which may also affect other websites.

On V3, I *think* I've heard what appeared to be random sounds of pieces moving popping out in my games even though no move had been made. Or maybe it's just my mind playing tricks on me or maybe I had another game tab opened, not sure...

Other than this, I have never experienced any sound issues with the live chess interface on any other browser (other versions of Firefox without "audio mute" working fine) and time controls, except when there's extreme lag.

No less important is that I have acquired the habit of properly setting up the audio settings on any system I use - heritage of a past audiophile hobby. And the truth is that most people forfeit the necessary steps to make sure that their own systems (browser and system-wide) are properly set up (which is understandable given the potentially huge amount of variables to cover in computer audio systems). So it's difficult to say whether most of these sound issues arise from the back end, front end or the end user's system. Maybe a bit of everything.

Can Chess.com please help to fix the sound problem. I have no sound!

Wicked_Soul

I had this problem with my old PC. It's worse now that I've upgraded to an iMac. Given the amount of time that has passed, it looks like Chess.com is not attending to this issue.
