strange rating change

Just curious. I played a live blitz game against a player. his rating was 1200. After the game -I lost it, he played way better than me- his rating jumped to 1356!!!

How was this possible???

Thanks for explaining me!

Obviously he was a new player on the site.

I don't see anything strange about that at all.  If his rating was exactly 1200, then it was probably a new player (or, at least new to the specific type of game), so large changes in rating should be expected.  Since he beat you, his rating should go up and it did.

I see. Cannot understand how rating can go up 136 points with a single win anyway.

Like we said, he's new and the site wants to get him to the correct rating as soon as possible.  I played against a new guy once and his rating went up over 500 points when he beat me.  This was a guy that I kind of knew from OTB tournaments I've played, and I know he's about the same playing strength as I am, so that jump makes perfect sense.

If you notice, your rating didn't change much from that game, and for the same reason - the site doesn't know what his real rating should be, so you're not going to be punished for losing if he's actually a lot better than the initial 1200 rating indicates.

As people complete more games, the site becomes more certain about what their rating is, and so their rating changes much less.  By the way, this is how the Glicko system (which chess.com uses) is designed to work.  The less certain the site is about a person's rating, the more it is likely to change and the less that their opponents rating is going to change in response.  This is represented in the "Glicko RD" number on any player's Full Stats page.  The higher the RD, the less certain the site is about the rating.

Omnipaul thanks for your clear explaination. I appreciate it very much.
