what is a time out ratio?

why would you want to improve it?  (might you rather want to worsen it?)

I'm not sure how to find out your live chess time out ratio.  Improving it, though, is simple; just don't lose on time.

Since you made another topic in live chess it appears you are confused and have confused others.  http://www.chess.com/forum/view/livechess/tournament4

Live chess time outs are normal and are not displayed anywhere.

Online chess time outs are counted and displayed here.  http://www.chess.com/echess/profile/grahamfilip

All Games
Total Games: 80
In Progress: 0
Timeouts: 57% (last 90 days)
Time/Move: 10 hrs 44 mins

Since you do not have much of a history in the last 90 days you can play and finish many games faster than you normally play, without timing out. In this way there is a small possibility to decrease the ratio.

If you play as you normally would, even without timing out, you cannot decrease the ratio. It could even go up when the oldest non-timeout decisions fall out of the 90 day window. These have to be replaced and then even more non-timed out games have to be added on top to decrease the ratio.

The majority of players just have to wait until the timeouts are older than 90 days so they fall out of the window.
