Timer abuse

Is it possible to report timer abusers? I played lots of games where players have let the timers run down. Since I play mainly 30 minute games this can get a bit boring. I reckon chesss.com should keep track of people who do this and the ban them if they do it too much.

do they disconnect or do they jusleave it there in a losing position? u should also upgrade to a premium membership where u can play mutiple games simultaneuosly:)

The worst ones just leave the timer to run down, disconnecting isn't so bad because you win after a bit, but if they stay connect you have to wait for anywhere between 10 and 50 minutes.

I have been thinking about upgrading, but I don't know if it's worth it.

Chess.com encourages players to be kind and show good sportsmanship. Our Fair Play policy expects that players will not:

    intentionally disconnect during games
stall to make opponents wait unnecessarily

If their account is flagged for breaking this policy they account will be restricted. They will still be able to play games with friends or accept direct challenges, but they will not be able to create or accept open challenges until they play more games that follow the fair play policy.

Thanks for the reply.

Is it possible to report these people then.

Vote with your wallet.  I say:   'upgrade' if you like and trust the site well enough to provide your personal and financial information to pay for being able to use more features (and are confident your money will be put to good use).

As to being bored waiting while some of your opponents let their clock run down, Microsoft's O/S has long since allowed PCs to 'multi-task' (do many things at once).  You can open one or more additional 'windows' and be browsing your favourite forums (such as here) or working on other (non-chess) PC activities.

The site's sounds will alert you if and when your opponent makes a move.  I think  there's a sound at the end of live games (if not, you could set a timer to go off for when your opponent ought to have run out of time).  Undecided

sftac, thanks for the advice. I do do other things waiting for the timer to run out, but it's still irritating when it happens.

Also, I know it has little to do with anything but I'm running linux, however I take your point.

You're not alone. Had a mate in 1 in a 30 minute Live game and he had at least 25 mins left. He did not make a move for over 20 minutes and getting bored of waiting I left to do something else assuming he would just let clock run down to 0. He moved with 5 minutes left and I actually ran out of time, not being at my computer. My fault I know but still frustrating :)

This, is precisely why it's handy to have a timer.  You could have set it for 6 minutes and then checked to see if he'd lost on time.

What he did is not abuse, though.  It's called being clever and psyching out your opponent.  Now, if it had not worked and he simply lost on time, you'd have grounds for complaining I believe.   As it is, he might have a complaint about your letting your clock run down.

this is why I am wary of playing longer time controls with total strangers on the internet. it seems like there are many inherent risks. I think you should only play such long time controls with people with whom you are friends, who you trust, otherwise I'd say only play video game bullet and blitz with total strangers.
