In-game tips:
1. Keep your eye on the goal: CHECKMATE
2. Think of what the opponent would do to combat your move
3. Try to counter-attack, rather than defend the attacked peice
4. Know when to resign*
5. Don't sufficate your king
6. Don't pull out your queen too early
7. Analyze if you have time
8. Take the initiative
9. Play the game not the rating*
10. Carefully consider each individual trade*
11. Trade off queens only if you're ahead pointwise (view details)
12. Don't run your king out of bounds (your side of the board)
13. Connect rooks and knights
14. If the board is fairly empty, think about advancing a pawn.
15. Trade off knights for bishops only if the board is fairly clear (and vise versa)*
16. Keep tabs on your position*
17. Win or lose, always wish your oppenent a good game*
*4 In general, beginners should never resign
*10 Before you accept an offered trade, think not only what leaves the board, but more importantly what stays on the board.
*9 Don't under estimate your opponent just because his/her rating is lower (and vise versa)
*15 Trade off bishops for knights only if the board is fairly cluttered
*16 Don't let every other chess rules/tips outway the importance of position
*17 Some people feel insulted when oppenents fail to do this at the end a game, I just read a forum post about it the other day
