What does 'G/40 +20 seconds increment' mean?

I haven't played a rated game in over 3 decades but am planning on entering a tournament this weekend.  I also just bought my first digital chess clock figuring my old analog one is obsolete.

So what does that time limit mean?   I Googled it but no luck.

Thanks.

40 moves for the entire game, with a 20 second increment.

Everytime you hits the clock, you get get an extra 20 seconds added to your time.

40 moves, or minutes?  How much time does each player start with on their clock?

Sorry.  40 minutes for the entire game

Sorry 40 minutes for the entire game.  You both start with 40 minutes, and after you hit the clock you get 20 seconds added after each move.

It means that you need to play 40 moves in 20 seconds.
