why are chess players so nerdy?

Chess community hasn't always been a haven for nerds amd socially inept people. In the days of Paul Morphy and other aristocrats of the 19th century, most chess players were "grand viveurs".
They enjoyed a good cigar and philosophical discussions on an elevated level between games. A great sense of humour was mandatory in those circuits.
We just have a different way of thinking.
chess is a sport and an entertaining game but why are the people associated with the sport or perform well in it very nerdy?
